Comparing WordPress.com vs GoDaddy or other hosting plans

Hi – I am trying to figure out who to go with, and other hosting providers provide things like malware scans/removal and one-click restore, SSL certificates. Does WordPress offer anything like that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

Yes, with WordPress.com it is a managed environment so you don’t have to worry about such details.

Take a look at this guide which explains the differences between using WordPress.com and the open source, WordPress installation:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Thanks very much. The “no plugins required” is a huge plus. Plugin incompatibility is what got me in trouble with my hosted solution in the first place. Can you tell me more about how the backup and restore functionality works, especially if there are malware attacks?

Lastly, where can I find promos? I have two sites that I’d like to port over from a hosted provider, and they have a 3-year plan for 2 sites at $287.

Really appreciate you responding on a holiday.

  • If there’s any active promotions you would hear about those from us directly through the email connected to your WordPress.com user account.

The plan upgrades are also fully refundable up to 30 days after purchase. So, if you decide that you are not loving what you’ve created with us, we will give your money back.

With WordPress.com we have very rare and minimal down time (knock on wood). It won’t matter how popular your site is, how much traffic you have (so long as it is legit and not bot spam) we will keep your site up and running. That’s the beauty of a managed environment. If something were to happen our systems team can help us restore a site if needed. I’ve never had to do this though.

Spam is an unavoidable part of using the internet and we do our best to keep on top. We have an entire team of folks who work on this. Our spam filter is quite smart and learns quickly too.

I just wanted to mention the business plan to you. With our business option you will have a bit more freedom over your site and the ability to use third party themes and add plugins to the site if you want. All of this, occurs with in that managed environment and we are here to help you along the way should you run in to issues.

Thanks very much. I appreciate it. They are both blogs at this point so I’d like to ease things in a bit. The one thing I found about third-party themes is that when they don’t update it begins to break things (e.g., plugin compatibility).

One other question: if I were to use my URL and point it to my WordPress.com blog, is it considered a redirect, or would all URLs once it points people over change over to MyURL.com?

    Thank you.

Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping.

What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started

To map an existing domain http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

You can use the Personal Plan if all you want is a custom domain, removal of advertising, live chat support and 6GB Storage Space but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically. Go to http://wordpress.com/plans to upgrade.

  • As timethief mentioned, it will be a seamless redirect. Get back to me with any questions about the information she has shared.
