Complaint & Suggestion

We started our photoblog on Jan. 3, 2008. The template we chose was a simple and flexible width WordPress one so that we could use 750 x 500 px photos. We paid for extra space to hold all our images at WordPress. And we were delighted with WordPress.

I didn’t quibble about the changes made recently even though uploading images/photos was harder.

Then from yesterday to today, another change was made concerning images. Before, when selecting Full Size for the image to be inserted in the post, we got the original Full Size we uploaded as 750 X 500 px. Now, Full Size has a code which is inserted for the image when inserted in the post cropping the size. The Full Size is 400 x 266 px.

It took awhile to figure out that Full Size today is not what Full Size was yesterday or months before because WordPress had changed it. I certainly hadn’t seen anything mentioned about this from WordPress. I’m not happy. Why isn’t there an option, then, for the original size of the photo uploaded?

I figured out how to get the original size by getting the URL for the uploaded image, and not selecting any size of thumbnail or medium or full size. I then click IMG and insert the html and click twice to get it inserted into the post. A lot more work than I had before uploading an image and inserting it in the post. And by the way, the alignment for images doesn’t work either. The centering of the image is a lot more code that doesn’t work.

So that is my complaint as above.

And a questions: Why was the Full Size changed to not allow the original uploaded size? Why is Full Size the now 400 x 266 px?

The suggestion: Please provide a selection for original size uploaded beside the thumbnail, medium, and (cropped)full size.

    Thank you,

    Anna

There are some weird stuff going on…. I got a page to start a blog a momment ago when I clicked to reply in this thread.

    I don’t understand universalgeni…. what Frontpage repair?

  • Unknown's avatar

The forum frontpage is hard to read when a blogger have a long alias (name). Simply. Not your fault…

    :-D)))

The problem with getting the “new blog” page has been coming and going for about 3 or 4 months now. At some point it will settle down when staff gets around to whacking the server with a rubber mallet.

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand… a bit lost as to what this is about concerning front page and ‘new blog’.

My complaint is about the just new, today, change of size for images/photos as to full size… as I had written in my lead post above and I’m not going to repeat. And where is an answer to all of that? I’ve written to support and I’ve posted here and it is a merry-go-round. Just a bit frustrated here….

Clicking on the reply button and getting the “new blog sign up page” was what I was talking about.

Regarding your original question, WordPress now looks at the width of the theme you are using and uses that to determine what the maximum width for your photos should be so that it does not break the theme. On flexible width themes it appears like they are taking the minimum post width that the theme will have if you narrow your browser window down to where the post area stops shrinking in width. I wish they would have called it something other than “full sized (since it isn’t) and instead labeled it something like “maximum theme width, or something similar.

There is a solution for you though, and it is outlined here, fresh off of the digital press: http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/04/21/more-on-inserting-images-full-sized-at-wordpresscom/ .

It’s a little more cumbersome than the B.U. (before upgrade) procedure, but it works just as well and will insert the image (really) full sized.

This is a screenshot of the Forum front-page as it looks when a person with a long user-name have written in a thread. Notice that the column for tags have moved into the thread title lines to the right:

In order to fix it people sometimes drop a word or two in the thread that is causing the problem.

It is only related to the appearance of the Forum. I regard it as some kind of a bug that I hope WP will fix some day.

Hi thescaredpath. Good grief! I had a hard time finding this thread! The theme or template I am using is WordPress Classic which suppose to support 800 px width for photos. Yes, the should call it something other than ‘full size’. Anyhoo… I appreciate your reply. I was copying the url, clicking IMG, and pasting it in. It would be so nice if WordPress wouldn’t play around with stuff like this. I feel like I’ve gone back to Blogger 4 years ago. It is like this change and move by WordPress for image insertion has gone back to the old days and it is very cumbersome.

Sorry, WordPress… I came to WordPress because I had like the many features you Had. I still like WordPress but this image stuff is a step backwards, for me.

    Okay, universalgeni, I understand.

    Thanks for your help, thesacredpath.

Sorry for the typo, thesacredpath, with your name… A typo kind of day.

@universalgeni, what browser/operating system are you using? In Safari and Firefox, it will text wrap the topics to make room for the longer username.

Not a problem surface, sometimes it is a scared path.

I think one of the reasons wordpress did this, was that there were many, many, many, many threads here in the forums where people were inserting images that were too wide for the themes they were using, which would force their sidebars down to the bottom of their blogs. I’ve probably helped over a hundred with this problem myself. By having the insertion routine look at the post area width and size the images accordingly, it keeps the vast majority of bloggers happier since they don’t have to fiddle with image width to keep from breaking their themes.

For those of us who size our images appropriately before we upload them, it is a few extra steps, but at least we can still insert them full size if we wish.

    Hello thesacredpath!

    IE7. I like IE. :-D)))

  • We’ll be looking at some overt improvements to image resizing soon.

In the meantime, you can always resize your image within the visual editor – click on it and drag the anchor point at its bottom right corner. (I’m not sure this works in all browsers). In the code editor you can manually change the “width” and “height” attributes of the img tag. WordPress.com keeps your original full size image intact and will automagically produce a downsized version if required to fit the specified dimensions.

Thank you sacredpath and tellyworth. I got an email from support and they are working on the image options and had pushed some patches through. So far, the ‘full size’ isn’t working as of now, and I am using an alternative to post my photos as my full size of 750 x 500 px. So, in time, I believe WordPress will have it all worked out for image options.
