Complaints from users of inappropiate ads appearing
-
We have been informed that all ads that appear on our blogs should be “family friendly” and if this was not the case to post it here for the attention of staff. We have had complaints that some of the ads appearing on our school websites are inappropriate, for example on one ad when clicked linked to an over 18 site.
Can we have reassurance that adverts appearing on our school websites will remain appropriate for school aged children?

The site linked to your username here (ecssystemsblog.wordpress.com) doesn’t have much on it – is the is the one you are experiencing problems with? If not, could you provide the website URL in question so we can offer more assistance.

@hallluke: the user @ecssysadmin has other site (private), see my answer and the second link

Yes, please provide the URL of the exact blog in question as halluke has requested. To off-set the costs of providing free hosting to millions of bloggers, WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. If the ads you see are found at the end of blog posts then provided you see this small About These Ads link what you are seeing is WordPress.com generated advertising. http://en.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/
Any other ads appearing to you are not placed by WordPress.com. If you see any other ads then you could have an issue on your browser or computer. Unfortunately they can be being placed there by software on your own computer or your visitors’. Such ads are sometimes caused by malware or a virus, but more often it is due to a browser extension or adware found in some games and shopping sites and toolbars that may have been installed in a browser.
These sites have further explanation and suggestions for eliminating the ads:

@halluke the site in particular had to be taken down due to the inappropraite site that the advert was linking to.

WordPress.com Staff aim to provide only family friendly ads. The definition of that will of course vary from place to place and country to country. Example: what religious schools in North America consider to be family friendly and what public schools consider to be family friendly vary from place to place and from continent and country to continent and country.
I’ve been here for over 8 years and the complaints I have seen were all created by malware, adware and viruses on the computers and browsers of those who complained and or on their visitors’ computers and browsers.
Staff cannot investigate any ads on any blog that has been deleted so you have reached a dead end.
-
Hi @timethief we haven’t deleted the site only made it private to prevent complaints from parents – we can provide access to staff so they can investigate?

Yes, please provide the URL of the exact blog in question as halluke has requested.

@ecssysadmin
Staff can access any blog private or not I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Also post screenshots of what is being complained about please so Staff can examine them. You can use http://snag.gy/ to share screenshots. Or you can use the WordPress.com guide I link to http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ and upload it to your Media Library, and then return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it. -

Hi macmanx, with the risk of interfering with the original poster – apologies in advance, my http://ezoltan.wordpress.com blog also displays questionable ads such as dating and hot celebrities – nothing related to what my blog is about and definitely not what I browse for in private from my computer. I wouldn’t mind ads that are related to my blog and I do understand your need to rely on them, but let me ask, what does dating has to do with a technical blog focusing on Exchange server?
My boss drew my attention to it, so it was rather embarrassing. Thank you WordPress.
If WordPress is allowing such ads and they call it “family friendly” (you may also want to know my wife’s stand on whether extra-marital dating is family friendly), then I am sorry but I’ll have to take my blog away and warn everyone else who wants to use WordPress. While I do understand that ads will be removed for a fee, why would I pay WordPress to remove them if they, contrary to their statement, allow such content? What’s the guarantee that WordPress will take the money and will actually deliver?
Please ensure that these ads are removed and no longer allowed on my blog. I don’t mind content that’s related to what I blog about.
Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you.

When you buy the annual No Ads upgrade from your Dashboard>Store>Store, WPcom removes all ads they place from appearing on your website. Period.
If you do not buy the No Ads upgrade, WPcom does have the right to show ads on your WPcom website; besides you agreeing to this in the ToS, it helps support the free features. However, if you see inappropriate ads appearing on your website (which of course WPcom has no interest showing on a family friendly site), please take a screenshot and upload it to your site’s Media Library and then let Staff know in this thread.
