Complete newbie! Macintosh user/Install New Theme?

Can you please help this middle-aged mom? I found a theme I like on one of the free wordpress theme sites. I downloaded it/unzipped it to the desktop of my macintosh. Now what? How do I install to my blog site? Don’t know nothing about FTP, Fetch, iDisk, etc. Am I doomed to failure? If not, please, go slow, and repeat the hard parts for me so I can understand…. Thanks!

i think you have a self-hosted blog, in which case you have to go to http://wordpress.org/support to place your query. this is the forum for bloggers hosted by wp.com. please correct me if i’m mistaken.

OK, then maybe I am under a mistaken impression. As someone on WP.com, am I bound to select the themes that are under the website here? Can I customize them beyond new headers, etc?

If your blog is here at wordpress.com, then yes, you are limited to the themes listed under presentation > themes. http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/09/27/edit-my-templates/
You can further customize the look of your blog with the CSS upgrade, but unless you are knowledgeable about CSS editing, it is not really recommended since there is no “official” support for it.
