Complication with mapping an existing domain
-
I just transferred a new domain from Go Daddy to Hostgator who hosts my account. In doing this, I transferred the domain to Hostgator. But I have just started a wordpress blog for the new domain and I would like to get rid of the @wordpress.com and just have the domain name, but I don’t know where to transfer the domain from…do I redirect it from Go Daddy or Hostgator? Any help would be appreciated!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, try this link; lots of detailed info in there – long process.

long process.
should take 5 to 10 minutes tops – however the domain name needs to not be registered here since WordPress.COM is not set up to accept incoming domain name transfers
once the mapping and name servers are set correctly it can take 24 to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet – access to your site may be erratic during that time

If you would like to map to a domain that you own from your wordpress.COM blog you will first need to set up domain mapping.
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.
Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is.It does not have to match the domain URL.
If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.
If you own a domain then see here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

I have followed all the instructions. I went to my domains and updated the primary domain. According to the “Map an Existing Domain” page, kayakfishingcharleston.com is already mapped to my wordpress blog, but when I go to “My Upgrades” it shows the $13 domain mapping fee, but in a red box it says, “DNS needs to be updated”. When I go to my Dashboard it says “Although your site address is kayakfishingcharleston.com, keep in mind that your dashboard address is (email visible only to moderators and staff)/wp-admin. It seems like I am missing a step somewhere, but I don’t know where. I have gone through the instructions several times and I can’t get passed where I am right now. Any help?

You seem to have domain mapping – however the name servers are pointing to HostGator – the domain is still registered with Godaddy
If you want to have the content of kayakfishingcharleston.wordpress.com. displayed to visitors, and they will see kayakfishingcharleston.com in the address of their browser line – then you need to point the name servers to WordPress.com
However you also seem to have a hosting account set up with HostGator
Are you trying to have your blog on HostGator on on WordPress.COM?

Dear Auxclass,
Thanks so much for the note. This should be such a simple thing, I cannot believe that I am having such trouble with it! All I want to do is have a simple blog on WordPress and be able to use the address kayak fishingcharleston.com. I thought that I had to have the domain hosted somewhere, which is why I added this domain was added to my wife’s hostgator account. If I do a DNS redirect from Go Daddy, I think it will accomplish this, but not sure if it will mess up my hosting with Hostgator, or if that even matters. Any thoughts? With hindsight, I should have just bought the domain name through WP, but it’s too late for that now!
Thanks in advance for your time and patience.
