Compressing already published images
-
Hello,
I blog at http://vohnmcg.com and noticed it was getting very slow to upload my images to WordPress.com. I reckoned it was probably because I hadn’t compressed them and my typical file size was 1.4MB per image. I have now started compressing my images using Picasa.
I’d like to know – is there a way I can go back and do that for images already published, or do I need to re-load them all? More importantly, if I do reload them all in compressed version, will this cause problems for other sites that already have links to them (e.g. in the blogger challenges I have entered where they are now on someone else’s website and on Facebook etc)? Would I be breaking the links to them?
Thank you so much for any help you can offer! Clueless here!
Cheers,

Hi Vohn,
Uploading images that are 1.4MB in size shouldn’t take too long. Have you tried uploading images on a separate internet connection? Did you experience the same upload speed?
To answer your other questions, there is not a way to go back and compress all of the images you’ve already uploading. To the second part of your question (will it disrupt other sites), the answer depends on how the images are linked. For example, each one of your images has a file URL like this:
If other sites are displaying your image by linking through the file URL, then yes, the image on the other site would be affected. This is because the file URL will likely change when you upload the new image and delete the old one.
For Facebook, those images should not be affected if you remove the original image from your blog.
Does that help to answer your question? Let me know if you experience the slow upload on multiple connections!

Thank you Jeremy – very helpful.
I did try a different internet connection but had the same problem. Everything is much faster now I have compressed the images.
Regarding replacing older images with a compressed version, would there be a way I could edit the new image’s URL to match the old URL? I think the answer is “no” but if there is a way & I was careful to do that, would the link to the URL from another site be maintained?
Thanks, Vohn

Hey Vohn,
I’ve tested this out, and it looks like this might be a non-issue after all. However, it would likely be better to keep the URL the same for the image just in case other bloggers have linked to it.
This can definitely be accomplished for some images (not all). For example, here’s the link to an image in my Media Library:
The 2014/03 section of the link indicates when the image was uploaded. The 06 is the file name (my file was 06.jpg). So, for any images you uploaded in March, you can delete the image and re-upload provided the file name stays the same.
Unfortunately, you can’t change the file URL after it has been uploaded (so you can’t go back in and change the date). However, I don’t think this should be too big of an issue as the link from another blog would have to be directly to the image link, which doesn’t happen too often. Does that make sense?

That’s is very helpful & thanks so much for taking the time to test it out Jeremy. I really appreciate all your help & feedback.
Cheers,
