Concept for Historical Photo Show: WordPress or Not?

    Here’s my first attempt: http://spillerfamily.info/perry/

It goes some way to explaining what I hope to achieve,
in a general fashion. I have some ideas, but they’re flexible
to a degree, depending on what I decide is the best of
    the available options.

There are hundreds of pictures involved. It seems that
grouping them by decade would be a good start. (Many
of them don’t have the year taken available). An Introductory
    page seems appropriate.

Then a link to each decade (another page[s]?). Then some
sort of thumbnail slide show, with either auto or manual
advance. The ability to click a thumbnail for a larger
image. ‘target=”-blank” ‘ stuff. An option to jump to another
decade (page) if in the wrong era?

Usual place for comments. Moderated before being
visible, perhaps? Some sort of declaration that free use
    with acknowledgement is OK?

    Anything else?

I’m starting with a few vague concept notions, here. If
anyone else has “been there – done that,” please let me
know what you decided upon. Even better: where it is
    so I can have a look-see.

I have some good news and bad news for you. What you want to do should work fine on WordPress software, it is being used by many historic groups to show history.

The bad news is you are asking in the wrong forum, there are two types of WordPress, .ORG and .COM

The site you are asking about does not seem to be hosted on WordPress.COM so you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.

This site is for support of sites hosted on WordPress.COM. You should address your questions to WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using: http://wordpress.org/support/

For more on the difference: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thanks, Auxclass. However, I see your post as

      good

    news & great news.
I shall re-direct myself to where I should’ve been in the first place. It is
good news (rather than bad) that you took the bother to tell me the error
of my ways in such a benign and helpful fashion. With edifying links, too.

It is great news that what I want to achieve is likely to be less difficult,
because, from the “good news” part of your post, it seems that more
than a few have trodden the trail before me. Would I trespass unduly on
your kindness in seeking a link to any examples you may know of; the
“many historic groups,” that you referred to?

Sorry about the bad formatting. No preview and no
edit function seem rather restrictive, when in a rush.

Many of the support documents here also work with the .ORG software – when I helped on the .ORG site I used to send people over here for some things as they documentation seems to be a bit better here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/

Sorry I can’t remember some of the historic sites I have seen – but the WordPress software is quite flexible so you can change things after the fact if you decide you don’t like the look and feel of a Post.

Read the support forums – you can learn a lot very quickly by seeing what others are doing with their sites and the questions on how to do things. I learned a lot by going through the support documents (not many seem to read them, many will just post to a forum when the question is on the front page of the help documents) –

Timethief has some great advice on building your site – works for .ORG & .COM – http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/ – there are some other people that help here and have good help resources also.
