Concern about people reblogging my posts
-
I am usually thrilled when people list a link to one of my blog posts in their blogs with a short blurb about what they liked about it. It is clear that it is not their post, but a post of someone else (like me). I’ve had people list my posts a few times over the last couple of months.
I am also thrilled at the opportunity to guest post on a person’s blog. When I do so, it clearly shows my blog name, a little profile blurb (of me), and linkage to my blog. It also allows me to manage the comments and see the “likes” as they come in. It is my hope that if they like the post they may even read some of my others, and perhaps even follow my blog.
What I am NOT thrilled about is when people reblog one of my posts and it appears as if it was their post and not mine. It may even say “by John Doe” instead of by “updownflight”, which is my screen name. Some of these people do not even precede the usual first paragraph of the reblogged post with a blurb about “I liked this post by updownflight because…yada yada”. All it has is then a “Source: Post name” link, and sometimes that link is not even that visible as being a link. In these cases I often think their followers read that first paragraph and assume it was written by the person who reblogged me. Very often they like that paragraph and then “like” it in John Doe’s post, instead of actually clicking the Source link and “liking” or commenting on it in MY blog post. Basically this has the slight feeling of plagiarism in my opinion.
Although this has not happened to any of my posts, I once read a post in a blogger’s blog that I really liked. I commented to her that she wrote an extremely interesting post. In response she wrote something like “Oh, I didn’t write that. That was from the New York Times.” Hmm? Nowhere in her blog did it say it was a New York Times article. Other than her eventual admission, it smelled a lot like plagiarism to me.
It seems like there is no real way to prevent people from reblogging posts. By the time that I see the pingback in my blog manager, it seems to already be approved and published in the person’s blog. I’ve sent them notes through their contact form, to please mention that “updownflight” wrote it, but they never respond to me. I tried to post a comment in the reblogged post (of mine) and they never approved my comment. I didn’t post nasty comments, more like “Thank you for reblogging my post about yada yada and providing a link to the remainder of my post”.
I am not completely against people reblogging my posts. I realize in a way it is a compliment. I just wish they would PLEASE make it perfectly clear that it is not their post and that it is mine (or whomever else’s they reblogged).
