Concerning categories and visibility
-
Why are my categories not showing in the sidebar on my blog after I added five of them? Beneath the header “Category”, it persists in indicating that there’s no category, no matter how often I try to add them.
Also, I opted for keeping my blog private till I am done tweaking and adding content. How come the stats show that I’ve people viewing it?
Any help? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
When I visit your site, I see that there are 6 categories shown in the Categories widget in the sidebar. Were you able to resolve this issue, or are you still having problems on your end? If so, I am happy to take a closer look.
Also, I opted for keeping my blog private till I am done tweaking and adding content. How come the stats show that I’ve people viewing it?
For users with private blogs, your Site Stats page will show any visits that you have made to your own blog, as well the visits of other users who have access to your blog. Once the site is no longer private, your visits will no longer be counted, and standard visitor stats will be displayed instead.
You can learn more here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Jerry,
thanks for helping. I now understand the stats, and I resolved the first issue with the categories but am irritated by the permalink structure. I expected that visitors will land directly on the blog page of a respective category when accessing one. What bugs me most is that the permalink page, who I presume will mirror the actual blog entries, features no reply option for the reader. For that, the reader must first click on the permalink which leads to the same page with the plus of the reply box. Something I can’t wrap my mind around yet. Sorry, man, I am new to this and have much to grasp. Apart from that, I still have some tweaking to do and content to add, so this will take some time before it goes public.
Drop me a line if you will and keep it up!
Best

You should be able to respond to any topics in the reader by clicking on them, which will reveal the comment box shown here:
https://cloudup.com/cwWtdOyxFefDo you not see this when you are in your reader?
Thanks for the additional info!

Hey,
mmmhhh, yummy poutine, you are a connoisseur, Jerry (but I need mayo with it). Well, when I go say to category essay and open it, I see a page with my first essay but no reply box below – the box is only visible on the next page that pops up after I clicked on the permalinked title of my essay displayed on the first page I saw when entering the category. Normal?
Bon appétit!

Do you mean on category pages such as this one? http://asojournersnotes.com/category/poetry/
Yes, that is the correct behavior. Because these pages are designed to list several posts, they do not display comment boxes/comments, as they would quickly become unmanageable. It seems a bit odd when you have so many category pages that have only one post, but over time these pages will expand to hold several posts.
You can actually use this behavior to your advantage by using the More tag to add a “continue reading…” link to your longer posts. This will create a nice teaser as well as a prompt to your readers that they need to click to continue.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hey Jerry,
I visited your blog and also the page promoting WP employment. I have a purely hypothetical question concerning the latter: what does it take to be actually hired (apart from the test contract)? Do I need to be in some special way tech and/or computer savy? You know, I am always looking for a job – especially for one that can be done from home. But though I use a computer, I am not a tech nerd in any way and would have to start literally from scratch (at 51). In addition, since 2007 I am banned from entering the US because I made a foolish remark at the border. I guess that doesn’t help either. The only academic credential I have is a MA in philo with a thesis on gentech. Anyway, if you don’t mind, please, give me some feedback on this. Also, I am intrigued by cross-referencing. How do you do it?
Thanks for helping me out, man!

Another question, Jerry: how can I make the audio and artist info on the music player visible for the listener. The info is in the media library but it doesn’t show when a song plays. Please, send me some feedback. Thanks!
Best
Frank -
There are a lot of advanced parameters you can add to the base audio shortcode, and they can be found here:
The info is in the media library but it doesn’t show when a song plays.
Unfortunately this info is not pulled in automatically from the media library, but you can manually add title and artist info as explained in the above guide.
Cheers!

Hey,
and where is the base audio short code to be added to? I’ve already read the page referred to, went in the library, saw the url for the music, tried to but couldn’t add anything to it as the field remained shaded and unresponsive. This is complicated…Jerry, please, give me a hand…
Frank -
Sure thing. Here is the base audio shortcode:
[audio FILEURL-HERE]so it would look like this
[audio http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mattmullenweg-interview.mp3]To add any variables to the shortcode, just be sure to add a “pipe” between variables. The pipe is the key above the return button on your Mac, and separates your variables from one another so they can be read properly.
So this is an example of adding a title
[audio URLHERE|titles=TITLEHERE]And it would look like this
[audio http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mattmullenweg-interview.mp3|titles=Matt Mullenweg Interview]Feel free to take any of the above sample codes and paste them in a test post on your site to see how they work.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hey, Jerry,
I tried this but I cannot make it work – the url link of the music file is listed to the right in my library when in editing mode, but I cannot insert anything there. I can highlight and copy the link displayed in the box, but neither delete nor alter it. So where do you make the additions to the link? Please, let me know.
Also, how about cross referencing? That would be interesting to me but do I really need a plug-in for that? How do you do it?
Thank you for your help!

Oh, sorry for the confusion. You actually want to add the shortcode to you blog post (or page) and not in the media library, as shown here: https://cloudup.com/cbAkBFn1Sox+

Unfortunately, at WordPress.com, we don’t allow plugins or access directly to the source code, due to security and stability concerns.
This is the tradeoff we make in order to keep the millions of sites we host running at top speed with virtually no downtime.
For plugins or custom code, you’ll need to use your own hosting provider and install the free WordPress software at WordPress.org. If you are wondering how WordPress.com differs from WordPress.org, this support article explains the distinction: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Let me know if you need assistance or if you have any questions.

Sorry, man, I just don’t get it. The music player is not on any post or page but integrated in the side bar to the right, featuring three pieces of music. So, I figure I cannot add anything to a post or page link because there’s none to be had. And, as I said, the respective url link displayed in the library for each piece of music is unresponsive and unalterable. I’ll try again, but….
:-( -
Hi Frank,
No problem. First of all, the URL you see in the media library is not where you want to convert to a shortcode. You have to do it in the page or post as you are writing (or editing) it.
Here’s a video walkthrough that may help. Note that I show uploading a new audio file, but you can also pick a previously uploaded one from your media library.
Hope that helps!

Hey Jerry,
I looked at the clip – thanks, that was clear! – but it doesn’t do it for me as I want the music player to be in my side menu only, not embedded in a post. Thanks anyway…
Happy holidays, man!
Frank -
I want the music player to be in my side menu only, not embedded in a post.
There is actually a way to do this, using a text widget in your sidebar. Just add the text widget below the custom menu widget, and paste the shortcode into the widget.
This will add the player to your sidebar, just below the menu on the left.
Hope that helps, and happy holidays to you as well! :)

Hey Jerry,
you never answered my query regarding the cross-referencing of texts. Is there a way to do it without needing a plug-in?
Thanks for your help and a happy new year to you!
Frank -
I’m not sure what you mean by cross-referencing in this case. Can you explain in a bit more detail?
Thanks
