    Hey Jerry,
on the computer on New Year’s Eve? Man, do you know any breaks? As for me, I don’t heed the number game, but, anyway, I hope 2014 finds you well.
Apropos the cross-referencing: I mean linking from one term in a text to a relevant explicatory passage in another text. Does this help?
    Let me know.

  • Hi Frank, and happy 2014 to you too!

Apropos the cross-referencing: I mean linking from one term in a text to a relevant explicatory passage in another text.

Gotcha. Yes you can do this, but you must link to a heading on the destination page, as there is no way to link to a snippet of text within a paragraph.

    Here’s how it’s done:

Thanks, Jerry, I’ll keep this in mind.

    Hey Jerry,
it’s me again – as you maybe know, I’ve embedded the music player in my sidebar and thought that once music is playing it would continue to do so as the visitor is browsing my blog. But this is not so – the music stops as soon as another page opens – say, I go from the homepage where the player is to a post in the poems category. Now, is there a way to make the music play continuously, i.e., during the entire visit of a person, regardless what he or she views?
    Please, let me know. Thanks!

  • Hi Frank,

No, that is not possible on WordPress.com as the site is reloaded anytime you navigate to a new page/post. It may be possible with a self-hosted WordPress (also called “.org”) site, or a site on a different platform, like flash.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, you confirm all I’ve read on the topic. Too bad. For now, I’ve scrapped the music player…I mean what’s the use if the visitor can’t have a throughout listening experience?! Is there a free theme on wp.com that would allow for continuous playing? I read that an “ajaxified” theme may do the job. What do you think?

  • Afraid not. I know that in the day, flash sites did this quite easily, but that platform has fallen out of favor for a variety of reasons.

Sorry that I am not able to offer any advice here.

k, thanks for helping, Jerry! I wish that the wp music player would come with a note advising the potential user on the continuous play issue – speaking of myself, it would have saved me the money for the space upgrade.
    Take care!

    Hi Jerry,
this is the end of the line for this my current blog. Being the notorious navel-gazer that I am, I feel that I have not much to say after all. At least not enough to merit a blog. I realized that I do not sufficiently appreciate writing and reading blogs, nor do I like the implicit call to industriousness and the pressure to perform and consume for recognition and advancement. I am tired of the performer game, and industriousness is one of the most overrated and unhealthy virtues there is! I also resent the people with their barely covert agendas wanting to sell their happiness&success recipes! Nobody can make my day but myself! Moreover, there is a saying on the four gates of communication that I like very much: one should always ask oneself 1) is what I say true? 2) is what I say kind? 3) is what I say beneficial? and 4) is what I say necessary? If the answer to any one of these four questions is “no”, one should better remain silent – and I cannot answer all unanimously with a “yes”. Surely, if we would all heed to these four gates of communication, it would be much quieter on earth…and possibly more pleasant, too. So, I will soon empty my blog of its content and make it private till further notice. If, at some time in the future, I feel I that I have something truly worthwhile to contribute (something more than me, me, me) while being able to respect all four gates of communication, I may pick up blogging again. If, by the end of the year, I am still not inclined to follow-up on this, I will delete the site for good. Whatever it will be, I remain with my best wishes for you and the WP team – thank you for your friendly and prompt support! I wish you love, peace, and health on your way, Jerry – live long and prosper!

  • Hi Frank,

Well I appreciate your honesty here, and recognize it in myself.

So, my take (if it matters) is that you shouldn’t put too much weight on your shoulders when it comes to blogging. Instead of doing it for “others” as if there is some huge audience out there, better to look at it more personally, like what do you want your blog to be for you instead.

At least, that is what got me through my block, when it came to blogging. When I tried to do it for others, it became a huge responsibility, like some kind of chore. What’s the fun in that?

Now, I pretty much blog for myself, and if people like it, then great! If not, well, it’s for me, not them.

Now, I mostly post pictures (the app on my phone makes it easy!) as that is something I am doing all the time, and enjoy sharing. If I do write, I tend to keep it short, and for those times when I really have “something to say” I write a longer post, and it feels honest and right, not forced. No pressure, right?

Anyway, that is what works for me, and has made blogging a lot more fun than it was when I started.

So best of luck, and if you need help, just holler! :)

Thanks for your feedback and input, Jerry. I’ll keep your words in mind. Be well!

    Hey Jerry,
I think I successfully deleted the content of my blog, but I am not able to delete comments I made nor to unfollow blogs I decided to follow (get an DNS pishing message or, in Reader, a general error message. I may have made a mistake in the content-deleting procedure. Could you be so kind and have a look at this, Jerry? As far as I can see, there’re only my comments and followed blogs to be removed. And another question: if I decide to delete the site before the attending fee renewal in December, I must do so before December 2014 – if not, I’ll pay the fee and am in for another year, right?
Please, give me some feedback. Thanks!

Mmhh, something went clearly wrong with my previous post. Anyway, Jerry, I managed to “unfollow” all blogs I subscribed to and realized that comments I made cannot be deleted (at least not by me). I also learned that the Gravatar profile cannot be deleted (though I would like to omit at least the image). Please, have a look at my blog anyway, check if all is nice and dandy, reply to my previous query concerning the fee renewal timing, and let me know if I missed anything. Thanks, man!
    Hail the happiness engineers!

  • Hi Frank,

It is not possible to delete comments you have made on other blogs. When you leave a comment on another blog, even though that is under your user account, the content you wrote in the comment becomes the property of the owner of that blog.

If the site in question has a contact form, you are welcome to try to contact them directly to ask if they will remove the comment. Nothing I can do to help on my end, however.

Just go to this page: https://en.gravatar.com/emails/

And you will see a “Don’t use this image” link. Click on it, and your image will be replaced with a default Gravatar icon.

The blog itself looks quite empty, and I noted that you have set it to be Private which means that no one will be able to see it anyway… if they try, this is what they will get when they visit: https://cloudup.com/czvYAPnx4Ky

    Hope that helps.

Thanks, Jerry, it’s all good. Since you didn’t address the fee issue, I assume that I am right in thinking that if I didn’t delete my site altogether by December, the yearly fee automatically re-applies and the site live on for another year.

  • There was a bunch of duplicate posts (I have since deleted) so I may have missed that.

Looking at your active upgrade for asojournersnotes.com, You do have auto-renewals configured, but it appears that your payment details need to be updated. So from that standpoint, if you do nothing then it will NOT auto-renew.

Given that this is a domain, if there is even a slim chance that you will use it again, I recommend not letting it go. There is no guarantee that you would get it back again if you let it lapse.

You can set up auto renewal again by going to Store>My Upgrades in your site’s Admin Dashboard, or have the option to transfer your domain to another registrar instead if you like.

If you prefer, I can also cancel it for you now (if you want to let it go) which will also prevent any reminder emails from going out.

Let me know how you would like to proceed with your domain or if you have any questions about your options here.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Jerry,
don’t cancel it yet as I’ll just lay it on ice till further notice. I’ll have made up my mind about it by December. Apropos the payment details: I no longer possess a credit card but will arrange for a new payment method when necessary and in time. Thanks!
