I currently have a website hosted by HostGator, but I want to replace it with this WordPress website that I have created. However, I am unsure of the steps I need to take to do so, and I am concerned that the change may affect my custom email address linked to my domain.

  • Hi there,

This is a question we get often, and I can appreciate your concern. The good news is that it’s not as hard as you are thinking. :)

You did not mention the URL of your current site, but typically what we recommend is that you start first with importing your site contents before pointing the domain here. That way your current site can stay “live” until your new one is ready.

When you first create your site we will assign a staging subdomain you can use to get set up in private, and make sure everything is looking as it should. When you are ready to “launch” the new site to replace the current one, that is when you will want to “connect” your domain to us.

Domain settings are portable and can be copied over, and we’re happy to help walk you through that in detail when you feel your are just about ready to launch. At that time we can look at the settings you have currently for email and make sure those are copied over correctly for the least amount of downtime possible. With the right planning it is possible to move with zero downtime.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
