confirm follow error

my followers can now subscribe using the follow me button, but they need to validate their following and it looks like they have to have a wordpress account to do that. the error they get is ‘Your subscription could not be activated. It may have expired, or the email address you subscribed with is not attached to your WordPress.com account.’ Can you please show me how they can follow without having a wordpress.com account as this is deterant ad hassel for a blog follower

Hi there,
There’s no need for a WordPress.com account to start following your blog. I just did it with an email address that’s not associated with a WordPress.com account.
Can you please let me know some of the email addresses your visitors are getting this error message?
The email addresses will only be visible to me and other staff members.
