Conflict between internal links and sticky header
-
Good afternoon,
I write to expose a problem I encountered using the Stratford theme.
I have a free account, so I don’t expect the maximum of customization options, but in this case there is an objective visualization problem:
If you add an internal link, like a clickable note, once you click and reach the related area of the page, it appears covered by the sticky header.
From what I’ve seen, there’s no way to disable the sticky header.
Is it possible to add that feature? I guess a lot of bloggers use notes or internal links, and it is quite an annoying issue.
Thanks for the attention. I wait for a kind reply.
Best regards,

Hi Alessandro,
Thank you for reaching out.
I understand you need to hide the header where “Abbas Agraphicus” and MENU resides when you scroll the page down?
That behavior of header is dependent on a Theme and Theme authors normally do not add that option to customization menu.
You can hide Header using custom CSS (available from Premium plan or higher as described here: https://wordpress.com/support/custom-css/).
Or you can choose another theme that does not have floating header as your Stratford Theme has, f.e. Spearhead.Hope that helps.

Yeah, that’s the problem. I think it’s an issue to fix regardless of the free or premium accounts.
I have no plan of passing onto a premium account by now. Is there a way to directly contact the Stratford theme creators?
Thanks -
Hi again,
Well, Header visual appearance is something that Theme authors have planned and it is a part of overall Theme appearance. Changing that means recreating the whole theme.
In general you are thinking in a good direction, normally Theme authors deal with adjustments or special visualization requests. But in this case Stratford Theme team is same as WordPress.com – Automattic. That means this forum is the only place to get their support.
Honestly, I do not think that we can ask for much attention to be focused on a free Theme recreation, when there are many other available Themes that do the same trick.P.S.
When you look for a new Theme, you can use “Try & Customize” to see how your current content looks like under a new Theme. More info about that is here: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/#preview-themes. The theme will not be activated until you press “Activate & Publish.”
Please tell us if you need help to find another suitable Theme. -

What you’re seeing is a limitation of how page jump links in HTML work. A page jump will always take the anchor point to the very top of the screen, so if there’s any fixed elements at the top, like the WordPress admin bar, the anchor point will be behind those elements.
The only way to prevent this is to use JavaScript code to scroll the page down again to make the anchor point visible, immediately after the jump. So this can be fixed, but the fix will need to happen in the open source WordPress software before it will be available on WordPress.com. They are working on this on WordPress.org where this software is made, but I have no way of telling you when it might be fixed.
The “sticky header” the OP speaks of is the WordPress.com marketing banner and the admin bar. Using CSS to remove those is a violation of our terms of service, so please don’t recommend that as a solution :)

To be clear, this is not an issue with your theme, and changing themes will not solve the issue.

Well, actually at the beginning I was referring to the header itself, not the wp banner.
In the theme I used before, beside the banner, there was this big header that remained visible when scrolling, so that if you, for example, clicked on “note 1”, you’d see “note 3”.
I changed theme meanwhile, and now the issue is smaller, but, as you said, it’s still there cause of the wp banner…but, at least it got better.
Thanks -
Hi @kokkieh,
I see your point, marketing banner is an issue too.
But yesterday abbasagraphicus.wordpress.com had Stratford theme installed which has a floating menu, which has absolute position on the screen under the marketing banner.
I have offered Spearhead Theme which is installed on abbasagraphicus.wordpress.com today, without a floating menu.Anyways, I do admit that my reply was not full, I did not investigate it deep enough to eliminate the problem totally. Thanks for pointing that out.
To move the text a little down (to show it below the Marketing banner and admin bar) I have a simple workaround for you:
You can add HTML anchor not to the header, but to additional Spacer block above the header like this:

You can see how the result looks likes here on my test website:

@maksimurasov Yeah I thought abouth that, but the problem then appears on mobile, where the header and/or banner don’t appear…so at this point i prefer to leave it as it is. Now that I changed theme the issue is quite acceptable.
It would be great if they fixed tho (I mean the banner issue). Thanks a lot to all of you for the help
