Conflict on sign-in username

  When I try to add a new user name, WP tells me I can’t use it (it already exists). When I try to sign-in with that same user name, WP tells me no such name exists. How do I get out of this loop?

  I deleted a site in which the username was a member. (That site was causing conflicts with two other self-hosted sites.)

  The username in question is associated with my primary email address, so I need it to work. I want all WP-related messages going to my primary email. Thanks.
