confused…

Hi. I’m confused about WordPress. Does this cost money or not? WordPress – .com or .org or whatever. Half the internet says free, half says not, most are confused like me. I want to publish but the only choices to launch seem to be pay. What is going on? Please explain and point me in the free wordpress direction. I would like my blog online on WordPress if free. Tell me how. THANK YOU

Are you trying to launch a free WordPress.com site that you’ve already created? Just make sure that after clicking the “Launch site” button that you leave blank the field at the top that says “Enter a name or keyword”. Instead just click on “skip purchase” at the bottom right next to your new free address.

    Hi
Thanks for the fast reply put that doesn’t help. I made a blog this morning on wordpress.com.

    My address is either:
wordpress.com/home/[the name of my blog]/.wordpress.com, or
wordpress.com/[the name of my blog].wordpress.com, or
    [the name of my blog].wordpress.com.

When I click “skip purchase” at Step 1/3 as you suggest, it takes me to Step 2/3 and there are only monthly payment plans of Personal $4, Premium $8, Business 25, and eCommerce $45. Free is not an option plan.

There is no way to get to Step 3/3 without clicking a payment option.

Maybe I am close but I don’t know how to advance. Please help. Thank you

After clicking the “Launch site” button at step 2 of 3 do you see:

Not sure yet? Continue with your free site

at the top of the page?

Hi, I’m also having this problem and aren’t receiving that option at the top of my page. The only options I have are to click on a paid option or to go back without launching.

No. Nothing like that at all.
The “Launch site” button” is not at step 2/3. The “Launch site” button shows up in the “Site” screen (on the left side of my Chrome screen) above the “Get the WordPress App” option. When you click the Launch Site button, it takes you to Step 1/3, where you click Skip Purchase for my current address. Step 2/3 is the pick a plan page and there are no free options and no other way to advance to launching.

    Please continue helping.
    Thank You

Hi therealsoapster, I also had this problem. One of the staff suggested I changed browsers and I was then able to see a ‘skip upgrade’ button that hadn’t been showing previously (probably due to add-ons).

Maybe that will work for you too?

I really thought WordPress would be free but there seems to be no way to launch my blog without paying.

I didnt find this to be a satisfying experience in terms of what was being offered.

I set up my free blog at blogger/blogspot and have been blogging for days.

    Thanks all for trying.

  • Hi @therealsoapster,

First of all, to clear up any further confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.
We, WordPress.com are a cloud-based platform where we manage WordPress sites. Whereas WordPress.org is a stand-alone software that you can download and self-host with any other hosting.

You can find more details about WordPress.com and WordPress.org on this support page:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Now, you say that you’re not able to launch the site without upgrading to a paid account – this should not happen and we’d like to help you out with that.

I’ve made a short video to show you what I see on your account when trying to launch site, have a look: https://d.pr/i/5Miwjb
If you do not see the “continue with free” option, please try to do this from a different web browser. It may be that some add ons you have active are causing this option not to display. Let me know how that goes.

    Fresatomica,
Thanks. One of my favorite bloggers is on WordPress. That’s were I wanted to be, but blogger/blogspot was fast, easy and free, so I’m there.

You should google the free/not free/.com/.org issue. A lot of people are baffled. Don’t feel bad, I’m not sure if it’s called blogger or blogspot, so they are not without their own confusion.

    Thank anyway

None of these options work. Tried to launch from a different browser and got the same thing. I wanted to use wordpress because I’d heard that it was a popular resource but this is obviously not working and only creates frustration. I’ll need to leave an honest review on rating resources.
