Confused

  • Unknown's avatar

I own a domain through eNom (www.healthymindspsy.com). I purchased a theme at forest themes for $59 to increase traffic in Google thinking it would be that one easy step to develop my website (theme said it was very easy to install!). I downloaded WordPress to download the theme. It seems like I can’t transfer that domain I own for free and instead I need to pay $8.25/month for premium account? I definitely don’t want the long name of healthymindspsywordpress.com. Am I correct? If so, are there any options??

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello there,
Mapping an existing domain is not done free of charge. If you want to map from a .wordpress.com site to a domain URL then you will need to add a plan and purchase an upgrade to map to an existing domain.

    re: purchasing upgrades

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

We have different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.

    Details:
There are no monthly payment plans and no bulk deal upgrades. We are billed annually. Also note that purchase orders are not accepted. We must pay for all upgrades in full at the time of purchase.

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade.

Premium upgrades do not include any premium themes which are all individually priced one time upgrades. The Business upgrade includes access to all premium themes but also note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.

Make sure you read the comparison very closely do you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Also read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and purchase upgrades at > Dashboard> Store > My Upgrades
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/

Your billing history will be at Dashboard > Store > Billing History
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/

Your only options for payment are found here Payment Methods http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/

Refunds have lime limits. WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers. The refund period for Domain Registrations and Renewals is 48 hours.

Note: It takes from 1 – 2 weeks for the refund to be received.

You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard, cancel any upgrades, claim a refund for any qualified upgrades, and disable auto-renew. Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades. You can also disable auto-renew there. http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#canceling-upgrades

I downloaded WordPress to download the theme.

There is no FTP access to any wordpress.com sites. The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes

for security reasons and we cannot:
    upload any third party themes,
    create child themes,
    create our own themes,
    edit templates,
    create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.

    See:

If you are still confused then know that WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

Seems to me the only worthwhile thing about upgrading and paying for WP is that you get live chat help with WP staff when you get stuck, most days anyway, apart from that it’s wasted money, there really isn’t much point, you can google all your problems anyways it just takes longer, unless you really need a domain name, but if you not running a business then who cares about the wordpress dot com on the end of the url, going free is far less complicated quicker and less stress.

    @artmixes
I’m not clear on how your post into this thread answers the question posed by http://healthymindspsy.wordpress.com/. In fact, I don’t think it provides any clarity at all and is more likely to confuse than to assist.

I am still confused though. I went to forest themes.com and purchased a theme that supposedly works with WordPress. I had no idea that was considered a third party theme.

Also, what do you mean by mapping from WordPress.com a domain URL? Sorry, the language is a bit foreign to me, so I ask that you be patient. What I understood from you is that I can “map” my healthymindspsy.com domain to one that’s hosted by WordPress.com with the theme I purchased on forestthemes.com. So you’re saying that in order to do that I have to upgrade to one of those accounts. Am I correct?

    Hi healthymindspsy,

I went to forest themes.com and purchased a theme that supposedly works with WordPress.

Installing a custom theme is a feature of self-hosted WordPress.org sites — you won’t be able to install the theme you have purchased, on WordPress.com

On WordPress.com, you can activate themes from the Theme Showcase here:

    https://theme.wordpress.com/

Also, what do you mean by mapping from WordPress.com a domain URL?

Mapping is the process of connecting a domain you already own (purchased elsewhere), to your WordPress.com site. Once the domain is mapped, users will see your WordPress.com site when they visit that domain.

This Domains support documentation explains the options available:

    Domains

I can “map” my healthymindspsy.com domain

If anything is unclear, come back to me.
