Confused about blog template vs latest posts

Hi, everyone,
I’ve created a mostly-static website for a friend to promote her new book and ongoing work. However, she’d like one page to be an ongoing blog. I’d like her to be able to manage the blog page herself, but she finds Web technology intimidating, so I’m trying to create and explain the easiest option.
When I go to Pages and use the “Add New Page” option “blog” is one of the many templates that appears, along with “contact,” etc. That page gives me the option of a fixed image with an overlaid text at the top, and an subscription form at the bottom, which I like.
However, adding content (if you’re not comfortable with the site) isn’t as easy as going to the “Posts” section and adding a new post. I’ve created mock “posts” and figured out how to give the page they are on the title of “Blog” and put it on my menu, but I’d like new posts to automatically go to the blog page with the picture.
The pages are hidden at the moment, but right now the editing menu has both 1: a “blog” page with two entries that include a date, tags, and author at bottom but no banner image, no page title, and no subscribe option
2: a “blog” page with a banner image, a page title, and a subscribe option but no date or tags after the entries and which is much harder to add content to.How can I combine them? Thank you!

I think that the simplest solution is to create a new page, call it “blog”. Assign the posts to automatically publish on to that page via this setting https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
Then link that page in to the site’s menu.
My Site – Customize – Menu – Add Item – Page – BlogNow, once that is done, your friend only has to click on My Sites – Posts – Add New to create her work. Does that help?

I deleted both options above, and started over. First I did
My Site – Add A New Page – Blog layout, and changed the photo to the one my friend wants.
After some more experimenting, including following your suggestions, I have realized that what was confusing was
That “preview” and “visit site” weren’t displaying the site photo banner
That denisenadeau.org/blog was displaying the photo banner but not displaying the private “test” posts, even if I was logged in as the editor
That going to dashboard-settings-reading-set blog page for latest posts seems to delete the photo banner no matter what the privacy settings are.
So, I think I’ve got it figured out now. Thanks!
