Confused about changing domain name

    Hi!
    So my current blog is called anonymousindian29.wordpress.com and i want to change it to vaishnavinandakumar.in
    Now I’m confused about the following.
    1. How is purchasing a plan different from purchasing a domain?
    2. Since I have to change the name of the site address entirely, will the purchase of the domain make me lose all my content in the original blog?

    Hi @anonymousindian29, the domain reserves the URL for you. If you buy a domain here without a plan, the domain will redirect to your free site address.

    The plan lets you use a custom domain as primary, and gives you a bunch of other features — removes ads, provides direct support, gives you monetization options, etc.

    I’d recommend buying the plan, and buying the domain. I hope this helps! And, your content will still all be there.

    So I’m planning to just buy the domain name and it says that
    ‘Domains purchased on a free site will get redirected to anonymousindian29.wordpress.com. If you upgrade to the Personal plan, you can use your own domain name instead of having WordPress.com in your URL.’

    Does this mean that even after I purchase vaishnavinandkumar.in and go to that site, it will still show ‘anonymousindian29.wordpress.com’ as the site URL?

    I have another doubt too.
    If i change just the subdomain name of the current wordpress site, will it affect my content and followers?

    Yes, exactly that. Your domain will redirect to your .wordpress.com site and this will be shown in the address bar. If you upgrade to a plan, then the domain will be made primary and the .wordpress.com address will be hidden.

    Also, note that each plan offers a domain for free for the first year.

    No, your content and your followers will automatically be transferred to your new address.
