Confused about domain names/upgrading – please help!

Greetings!
I am interested in changing the address of my website (currently sendthewholebattalion.wordpress.com). I want to remove the wordpress.com part. However, I want to change the name as well so it will be http://www.newname.com. I don’t want to lose any internet credit that I have earned to date. I was wondering if I could just buy a domain that has the new name that I want and then link the two websites together or how does this work?

You will need to set up Domain Mapping to use your domain with your WordPress.com site:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

However any time you change your site’s URL, there will be some hit taken to your search engine traffic while the search engines learn the new URL. This is unavoidable, I’m afraid.
