Confused about Domain when upgrading from free to Premium plan

  • Unknown's avatar

I wish to upgrade from a free plan to either Personal or Premium plan, but I am confused about the domain name, and registering it etc. Do I need to pick a new name or can I just keep the one I have, minus the wordpress.com tag? What does it mean to register it? Also, if I change the name will I lose all my followers? If I decide I don’t like the Premium plan, or it causes nothing but headaches, can I cancel it easily? I am quite comfortable with the free plan and it fits my needs, but I just want to get rid of the ads, and more and more ads are showing up and pushing my widgets out of position etc.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

It’s no worries! I’ll be glad to answer your questions — I’ll detail each question below, and at the end, I’ll give you some support articles as well, when you’re stuck.

Do I need to pick a new name or can I just keep the one I have, minus the wordpress.com tag? What does it mean to register it?

    — Yes, as you upgrade, you will get a free credit custom domain, that removes the .wordpress.com subdomain.

Register means to buy or own it as your own, so when you get a domain, unless you cancel it — It’s yours :)

Also, if I change the name will I lose all my followers?

    — If you upgrade, you won’t lose anything, and in fact you get more features. And, no if you change your domain — you won’t lose any followers, you’ll just lose .wordpress.com subdomain since that is what you would like.

If I decide I don’t like the Premium plan, or it causes nothing but headaches, can I cancel it easily?

    — Yes, you can cancel your plan within 30 days and get a full refund. If you don’t receive refund, you can always contact their support team for them to help further. We want you to get 100% Customer satisfaction.

I have a few support articles for you, that can help when you’re stuck:

I’m still confused re registering the domain…..the upgrade button says it comes with a free domain so I am assuming it is included in the upgrade or is it sometime I have to purchase separately? Also, is registering the new domain name a step in the upgrade procedure or is something I have to do separately? If I don’t like the plan, (as I have heard their are lots of updates on wordpress that mess things up), and I cancel it – or decide not to blog anymore what happens to all my data/blogs? Does it revert back to the free format, or do I lose all my posts forever?

    Hi there,

I have answered most of your questions in the other thread you had started.

or decide not to blog anymore what happens to all my data/blogs? Does it revert back to the free format, or do I lose all my posts forever?

Yes, your plan will be downgraded from premium to free. You won’t lose any content, if required you can export your data as a backup.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
