Confused about moving from WP to my domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve read dozens of help questions, I’ve read the FAQ, I’ve read tons of other stuff and it seems that all I’ve succeeded in doing is making myself amazingly confused. Being a relative newbie doesn’t help! I’m hoping I can post my questions here and someone can help.

1 – I already own the domain name but there’s nothing on it yet (my site is still in design phase). Can I still move my WP bog over there and keep it how it looks now and then change it later so it fits with the overall design of my website?

2 – I want the http://www.xxx.om to point to a different page than my blog. I think I’m correct in my understanding that I will have to set up a subdirectory (I think that’s the right name) so that it looks like blog.xxx.com right?

3 – Once I download the software and upload it to my webhost, do I have to be on my laptop to publish new posts or can I just log in like I do now?

4 – Once I move everything over to my new site, if people put in the address of my current site, will it redirect to my new one or will I have to put a “I’ve permanently moved, this site is dead” post up?

I probably have 1001 more questions but these are the most important ones.

    Thanks!!

If you are going to self-host, you are in the wrong forum. Head over to http://wordpress.org/support

#1 – you can export the contents, not the theme.

#4 – there is no automatic redirect. Youl’ll have to provide a notice and a link.

    vagabondetteva,
    1. your web hosting need to install wordpress first and there is a function to import your blog from blogger or wordpress
    2. you can use redirect command in javascript or meta command will do
    3. as long as you have access to the net
    4. you can apply point (2) , redirect the page

But I don’t think he can add javascript to a WP.com blog.
