Confused about MX records – email down for one week HELP

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been domain mapped http://www.lockharttherapy.com to my wordpress site. I previously used a re-direct to this site but want to domain map for google purposes etc. I’ve now written about 10 emails to 1&1.co.uk who host my domain and emails and they are now saying they want the valid MX records for my email account from WordPress.
I’m deeply confused my emails are hosted by 1&1. Any ideas what the confusion is. I’ve done the domain mapping process, pointed my domain at 1&1 to wordpress (adjusting the DNS there – adding the ns1.wordpress.com, ns2.wordpress.com, ns3.wordpress.com information.)
I’m not a techie and am finding this really really complicated to work out.
    Many thanks

The MX record info needs to come from 1&1 – below is a bit of info that should help

Try searching for 1&1 in the forum – I have seen a few threads on getting things to work

    Thanks.
    This is information they sent
“The 1and1 mail servers you need for your emails are mx00.1and1.co.uk and mx01.1and1.co.uk.”

And I used this to update the DNS at wordpress to the following using this information. (following the Sample Record at the foot of the WordPress Domains Custom DNS records page.

    CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.1and1.COM.
    MX 0 MAIL1.1.1and1.com.
    MX 1 MAIL2.1.1and1.com.
    TXT v=spf1 include:mail.1and1.com ~all
    A webmail 1.2.3.4
    SRV _xmpp-client._tcp 10 10 5269 1and1.com.

    This doesn’t seem to work.

    Many thanks
    Andrew

    CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.1and1.CO.UK.
    MX00.1and1.co.uk.
    MX01.1and1.co.uk.
    TXT v=spf1 include:mail.1and1.co.uk ~all
    A webmail 1.2.3.4
    SRV _xmpp-client._tcp 10 10 5269 1and1.co.uk.

Any ideas what’s going on. Apart from my incompetence obviously. I’ve tried filling in this DNS record box about 10 different ways now.
    thanks

Forgot to say I’m getting a pink error box saying “this does not match any of the DNS record formats.”
    thanks

I’ve tried to use this now. Is this in the correct format?

    CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.1and1.COM.
    MX 0 MAIL0.1.1and1.com.
    MX 1 MAIL1.1.1and1.com.
    TXT v=spf1 include:mail.1and1.com ~all
    A webmail 1.2.3.4
    SRV _xmpp-client._tcp 10 10 5269 1and1.com.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks
    Andrew

    Final attempt. Tried this now.

    CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.1and1.CO.UK.
    MX 0 MAIL0.1.1and1.co.uk.
    MX 1 MAIL1.1.1and1.co.uk.
    TXT v=spf1 include:mail.1and1.co.uk ~all
    A webmail 1.2.3.4
    SRV _xmpp-client._tcp 10 10 5269 1and1.co.uk.

    Is this one correct?
    thanks

Don’t put the A record in – it is some sort of test entry. The other entries are also probably not necessary

    • SRV _xmpp-client._tcp 10 10 5269 1and1.co.uk. Only needed for online chat
    • CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.1and1.CO.UK. Only needed if you use outlook and allow it to automatically find your server

BTW you should be making these changes in the WordPress “Edit DNS” from Dashpbard->Stores->Domains. You would be surprised at the number of people who try to set this up on their domain hosts name servers; once you point the nameservers to WordPress then the hoster’s name server settings do nothing.

Also it can take up to 72 hours for a DNS change to propagate across the internet, so you need to be patient after making changes.

Brilliant. I’ve filled in the box with this.

    MX 0 MAIL0.1.1and1.co.uk.
    MX 1 MAIL1.1.1and1.co.uk.
    TXT v=spf1 include:mail.1and1.co.uk ~all

I am working on the Dashboard>Stores>Domains page.

Many thanks for your help. I’ll wait 72 hours and hope for the best. thanks

I think you may have the wrong MX records. Looking up MAIL0.1.1and1.co.uk fails. The 1and1 page gives the MX settings as :

    • mx00.1and1.co.uk Priority: 10
    • mx01.1and1.co.uk Priority: 20

These do check out in the lookup tool. I think that rather than the settings you were goven you should set:

    MX 1 mx00.1and1.co.uk.
    MX 2 mx01.1and1.co.uk.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate you taking the time to have a look for this. I’ll give it a go.
