confused after making plan purchase
-
Today, I made a purchase and transferred my domain. It seems to have messed up so many things and I am not sure if they will correct themselves or not. Can someone please help me sort this out.
1) The original blog site was “experientialideas.wordpress.com” and the domain address is “experientialideas.com”. After the purchase I see a starter plan site listed as “experientialideas.com”, BUT I also still see “experientialideas.wordpress.com”.
2) Often when I click on a page on the starter site, it jumps over to the other site “experientialideas.wordpress.com”. If indeed these are the same site, why is it listed twice?
3) The content of the two sites is different. That’s the weirdest part. There are pages (the correct pages) listed on the starter site that I had rebuilt from my old Squarespace site (since they are not part of the XML export). But when I click on any of those pages to access the content, is say they are not available and may have been deleted. Which they are not, they are listed in the published pages. On the “experientialideas.wordpress.com” they are not listed as published and not listed in the trash. I created these pages in January as I wanted to get all the prep work done on the WordPress site before my Squarespace site expired. But now all those pages seem to be missing.
4) If I go to edit a post that is listed on the “experientialideas.com” site, it takes me to the posts on “experientialideas.wordpress.com” site. And, it links/takes me to the wrong post.
5) The domain has transferred already so I can go to “experientialideas.com” and it takes me to the home page I created. But, the homepage is actually not shown in the pages list on either the “experientialideas.com” or the “experientialideas.wordpress.com” sites. But obviously, if it is showing up, it is there somewhere.
6) That homepage also shows the four blog posts that I published for testing the homepage. Those blog posts show as posted in the blog list at “experientialideas.com”. On the other site, only one post is shown as published so that leads me to believe that the site is pulling from “experientialideas.com” and not “experientialideas.wordpress.com”.
7) In my email, I have a receipt that says I paid for the starter plan (and that same info is listed on the site named “experientialideas.com”. But 30 minutes later, I received an email from WordPress saying I still had items in my cart if I wanted to “Complete your purchase of the WordPress.com Starter plan”. If I click on that email, it listed the same things that I already purchased and have a receipt for. This is all extremely frustrating as I set it all up in advance, tested it out and set up everything so that I could transfer the domain just before my Squarespace annual plan expired. To now see the duplicate site and all the pages that I set up a few months ago are gone is really not what I expected from my WordPress experience.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

For me https://experientialideas.wordpress.com/ hasn’t yet been launched but I can see the other site online (with GoDaddy Registration and name servers) . If you have correctly changed the nameservers perhaps it just needs time to take effect?
-
That’s what I am hoping as the experientialideas.wordpress.com was the one I converted to a starter account and directed the DNS info too. But now a couple days later I still see both of them in my “sites” list. And the one with the starter plan often takes me to the other one when I go to edit a page or post. I am guessing that the entire experientialideas.wordpress.com was supposed to move over when I added the starter plan and DNS info, but it seems to be caught in limbo. Not sure whether to start building it all again or not.

Hi there!
So, it looks like you have a total of three WordPress.com sites. That might be causing confusion as to which site you wanted the domain and the WordPress.com Starter plan on. Here’s a breakdown for your convenience:
- Site 1:
- Free site with no domains
- Site 2:
- Free site with no domains
- Site 3:
- WordPress.com Starter plan with the domain experientialideas.com connected to it.
As you can see, only the third site is the paid site with the domain experientialideas.com, which is now loading the site on my end.
Based on the above list, is Site 3 the correct site that you wanted the domain and the WordPress.com Starter plan on?
If not, let me know which site you wanted them on, and I can move the subscriptions around for you.
Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

aisajib, thanks for the response. Yes, that is the correct site for the paid plan and domain assignment. That isn’t the problem. The problem is that when I click on things inside site 3, the site manager takes me to a page or post on site 2. Until I purchased the starter plan, I only had sites 1 and 2. I purchased the starter plan with site 2 and then it created site 3. The issue is that it didn’t copy everything over from site 2. There are also pages on site 3 (that were part of site 2) that now don’t link to active pages. In the transfer between site 2 and site 3 when making the purchase, it did not copy all of the site correctly and seems to have deleted some of it and left some of it on site 2.

Hi there – We will need to back this up a bit. So it definitely sounds like you originally had two sites here with us, and an old Squarespace site which was using your domain experientialideas.com.
Your goal was to move the old Squarespace site content here and connect your domain to our servers when the time was right. When the right time came, you attempted to purchase the Starter plan for your site at experientialideas.wordpress.com, which would be your new home for the old Squarespace content and your domain experientialideas.com.
Instead, something very confusing happened. An entirely new site was started for the Creator plan. And when you connected your domain to that site, things got even more confusing. I can totally see how that could be frustrating.
This is all to say that we don’t yet have a solution for you, but we are working on it. Thank you for allowing us a little more time to understand your sites better and come up with a way to get this back on track. Talk soon. :)

deancroyal Thanks so much! You nailed it. And for some reason in the transfer I’ve got half the content on one site (experientialideas.com) and half on the other (wordpress.experientialideas.com), and the domain based site often links back to the other site in the pages menu. The biggest thing I lost were all the portfolio pages that are listed in the experientialideas.com pages section. The pages are there in the list, but if I click on them it says they don’t exist. This is everything that was not part of the Squarespace XML so I had to rebuild them from scratch. If there is a way to go in the wayback machine to recover what I had originally prepared, that would be great. Thank you again for looking into it.

I’ll break out some of your comments below. I’m still going to need to get more information from you on what lives where before we can pull together a solution. That’s a kind way of saying this could get harder before it gets easier.
in the transfer I’ve got half the content on one site (experientialideas.com) and half on the other (wordpress.experientialideas.com)
I believe you mean experientialideas.com and experientialideas.wordpress.com. That’s ok for now.
the domain based site often links back to the other site in the pages menu.
This is common. Site menu’s don’t update after a migration. It sounds like you’ll need to update yours once we get the content sorted out.
The biggest thing I lost were all the portfolio pages that are listed in the experientialideas.com pages section. The pages are there in the list, but if I click on them it says they don’t exist.
This part concerns me. I’ll need two things from you next:
- Can you share with me an example portfolio page that’s listed in the pages section, but says it doesn’t exist when you click on it?
- Ignore the names of your 3 sites (they’re very confusing), look through all pages and posts across your 3 sites and let me know if all posts and pages are there and complete, including the information that came over from Squarespace.
What I’m thinking is we will need to help you move everything onto one site and call that home. But, in order to do that we first need to know if all pages and posts are here and complete (even if they are spread out across your 3 sites). Hopefully that makes sense. Looking forward to your reply.

deancroyal No problem to answer the questions. See below –

- For the portfolio pages, they are all listed in the starter plan site. Everything in the pages section here is part of the portfolio. The portfolio home screen (experientialideas.com/portfolio) that shows all of the pages is the at the bottom named “portfolio” and this links out to all the portfolio project pages. But if I click on any of these I get this:

The portfolio home page is out there somewhere because if I navigate to experientialideas.com/portfolio I see the portfolio home page (no images or text though because the other pages are missing). If I click on “Portfolio” in the pages list it gives me the same error as above, but if I navigate to the site in my browser, the page exists:

The other missing page is the blog home page (this is the experientialideas.com home page). If I click the home page in the pages list of the starter site, I see this. Which is not the actual home page.

When I go to the site “experientialideas.com” I see the correct home page (but the images are missing. So besides the missing pages, the imported images also did not transfer over or possibly link correctly. This is the home page (that I don’t see in the starter site pages list, but it is out there somewhere on WordPress):

Also, I navigated here using “experientialideas.com”, but once I am on the site it shows the WordPress address (https://mpearlman15.wordpress.com/) and not the domain address).
2. It looks like all of the blog posts and pages are listed in the starter plan site, but when I tried to click on one it took me to the other site (coming soon site). You can see that the roughly 800 posts are listed here on the starter plan site:

But if I click on the first one “ClipDrop’s relight” it takes me to the wrong blog post. See below:

If I then click the WordPress logo and click “All Posts” it doesn’t take me back to the post list above, it takes me to the WP Admin posts page of the other site (the coming soon site).

And I know this is the “other site” because on the starter site, four posts have been published and here only one post (The ClipDrop post) has been published. Maybe to correct this part, once we get all the Portfolio pages back and delete the “coming soon” site, I then delete all the blog posts and reimport. Maybe that would fix the linking errors.
I truly hope this helps you determine where to go next and appreciate your efforts.

deancroyal Any update on this? I was looking around today to create a new landing page that says “coming soon” until all gets sorted out, but when I updated what is listed as the homepage, the updates don’t show up when I navigate to my site. So I looked around at some domain settings and I think that another issue is that the WordPress site that “experientialideas.com” navigates to is no longer listed in “my sites”. In domains it lists “mpearlman15.wordpress.com” but that site is not one I see in my list of sites.

The starter site is listed as “experientialideas.wordpress.com”. If I go into domains and try and change it to the that site I get an error that looks like this:

But that site IS available, it is right here in my site list.

But “mpearlman15.wordpress.com” is not in my site list, but that is the site that the domain is navigating to. Why can’t I event update where my domain is pointing so that I can actually start editing my site and have those edits appear on my domain?
Please help me fix whatever is happening here. I am more than a month into paying for this site and I am still unable to use it since any updates I make (like trying to add a “coming soon” page) don’t take on my domain since WordPress is pointing to a site I can’t even see or edit. I am ready at this point to just start from scratch and rebuild every page, but I can’t even do that since my domain settings in WordPress point to a site that doesn’t even appear in my sites list. But it does exist as it appears when I navigate to “experientialideas.com”. But that site is not listed in my sites and I have a feeling all my missing pages are located at “mpearlman15.wordpress.com”.

But I am unable to access that site. If I click the “edit site” button lower right, I get this “Null” site. which comes up blank: no page list, nothing on the page. But it is out there since there is content that comes up on my site when I navigate to “experientialideas.com”, I see the four blog posts I had already created to test my site.

-
One last note – If I update to make experientialideas.com my primary address, “(email visible only to moderators and staff)” is still the site that appears, but the web address in y browser appears as “experientialideas.com” and not “(email visible only to moderators and staff)”. That adjustment did not make a difference in where my domain navigates to and also does not let me change the site address of the WordPress site. I still get the same error listed in the previous post.
-
OK – not the last note for today. I also just noticed that although my site is listed as having a starter plan and is already connected to the domain, it is listed in Settings>General as not launched. I am unable to launch it because when it asked for a domain I cannot add the domain that is already listed on the site (since it had already been launched when I added the starter plan). In addition, when I click on Settings>General, items appear in my cart (the starter plan of course, that I have already paid for because it lists that “experientialideas.com” is on the starter plan).

But here is my site list showing the this site is already on the starter plan

And it shows this site as launched since it says “Public” and does not show the “coming soon” thumbnail. But the second site in this list, which is “experintialideas.wordpress.com” is where “experientialideas.com” navigates to whenever I click to edit a page. Finally, as I mentioned before, the thumbnail shown in the starter plan is not the homepage that is listed when I click in to edit this site, it is the homepage associated with “mpearlman15.wordpress.com” which I no longer see in my site lists and cannot navigate to and is not the site that comes up when I click “WP-Admin” in the “experientialideas.com” site. It is however, the homepage I want. Wherever “mpearlman15.wordpress.com” is, I think it is the place where all the missing pages that are shown in my page list are hiding.

Thank you for providing a detailed breakdown and taking the time to take screenshots. While attempting to diagnose the issue, we also determined that there was an unusual behavior with accessing admin dashboard pages.
There was possibly a conflict with renaming a default domain, causing two of your sites to be set to use the same default domain
experientialideas.wordpress.com.This was most likely the reason why attempting to edit pages resulted in showing a different page altogether.
From what we understood, the important domain that you need moving forward isexperientialideas.com, and to have it assigned and set on the correct site.To resolve your issue with the site editor and domain attribution, we renamed each site to use their own respective default domains. Please make sure to refresh the dashboard page where all your sites are shown (https://wordpress.com/sites) you should now see that:
1- Your Starter plan is on the site with the default domain https://experientialideas1.wordpress.com/ – this was previously the one that was set to https://mpearlman15.wordpress.com. The main domainexperientialideas.comis attached to this site, so you can set it as your primary domain [instructions].2- The Free plan that was originally using the default domain https://experientialideas.wordpress.com/ is now renamed to https://experientialideas2.wordpress.com/.
From here, our priority is to insure that you are able to make changes and edits to your page, it’s still possible to move subscription, posts and domains between sites.
Is it possible for you to now test making changes to the site with the Starter plan (experientialideas1.wordpress.com)? That should be the first step from here, and we can then help you move your content to your site with the Starter plan.
Since we made changes that involved domains, your browser’s caching might not see the latest changes so we highly recommend that you either clear browser cache or to use a different browser. -
Close it out! Problem solved. Somehow in the transfer to the paid account, WordPress (or I) changed the name of the WordPress site, but all the pages inside the site did not update to that WordPress site so editing any of the pages went to a non-existent WordPress Blog address. WordPress has restored the site from that WP address and all is well (except that it didn’t retrieve all my images and I had to upload and relink all images not associated with the blog).
-
Glad you were able to get that resolved! I’ll close this out but don’t hesitate to let us know if there’s anything else we can help with.
