confused after trying to use bluehost

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to set up a blog using bluehost + wordpress and everything I put into bluehost kept coming back as not able to connect to wordpress or unavailable. So I cancelled the bluehost portion and got what they called a full refund (which was roughly $35 out of the $100+ I spent). I’m trying to figure out what account I currently have and what happened to the domain I ‘thought’ I purchased.

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hey there, sounds like you’ve got a few things to sort out. If you bought a domain, you’ll want to work on securing that first so it won’t go into domain redemption or end up in someone else’s hands. Did you buy it through Bluehost, and if so, can you get in touch with them right away about getting access to that again? I don’t know how it is there, but with our service we have just a few days of a grace period after a domain is cancelled, so you’ll want to work quickly.

In the meantime, if you’d like to set up a site with us, you’d be more than welcome. Here are our current offerings:

And here’s the difference between a free, DIY copy of WordPress and our hosting services. If it helps, I think of it like the difference between a recipe and a restaurant, but this summarizes the benefits of each option:

Let us know if you need more help in the meantime!

Thank you for the help. It looks like I bought it through Bluehost and it expires on 12.28.22. My options are to transfer it or purchase domain. I guess I thought that cancelling out the bluehost hosting portion would leave me with just the wordpress part of it, since they only refunded me a small portion. Would you know if I am able to transfer what I have directly over to wordpress? Thank you for your patience as I try to figure this out.

  • Hi @adamsengul,

While newly-registered domains have a 60-day transfer lock, you can connect it to WordPress.com in the meantime. Please keep in mind, you’ll need a plan upgrade to do this.

It’s worth noting that a plan upgrade include a one-year free domain registration, so once the lock is up, you can transfer it to WordPress.com, which will extend its expiry for a year.

If you have content which you have created on Bluehost and would like to migrate it to WordPress.com, here’s how: https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/

I hope that helps and please reach out again if you have any further questions.
