Confused as to how to archive. Can you help please?
-
Hi there,
I have a mix of posts and pages as I was confused in the beginning. I have photographs of horse riding events in drop down menus across the top and of other subjects in a list at the bottom of my blog. I would like to archive the menus across the top but leave the non horse events where they are.I read the info on archiving but I’m a bit confused. Can anyone give me a step by step guide please? It would be good to free up the main page a bit now. Thanks in advance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m a little confused about what you are trying to do.
Are you looking for a way to remove some of the links at the top of the page (for example “hippodrome 2011”)? If so, all you need to do is to remove those links from your custom menu. We have a support page here:
You won’t lose the pages themselves by removing those links, so they will be archived. But you will free up that space on your page.
Does that make sense?

Hello. I maybe haven’t understood archiving. I was hoping that everything across the top of my blog could somehow be accessed another way, ie if you can have an archives heading that clients can click into to access the older posts. I photograph events every weekend and it would be good to somehow have fresh 2013 headings. Am I making sense?

So the best way to do that might be to set up some category pages. Perhaps you could categorize the old posts by year or type/location of event or whatever you think would be most logical.
Then you could have a menu item at the top called something like “previous events” (or whatever) and submenu items based on the categories.
Does that make sense?
-
Some of my sub items under my categories are pages and not posts, so is it still possible?
-
That is true, you cannot use category pages for pages. So you might want to make a new page that has manually created links to your old non-post pages and then just add a link to that in the “previous events” submenu.
I hope that makes sense. There’s a lot of uses of the word “pages” in there.
-
Oh Lordy, so sorry but I don’t understand any of that I’m not very good with wordpress. What do you mean by non post pages and how do I manually create a link? If you have the time could you send me a step by step guide on how to do that. I would really appreciate that.
Cheers

Let’s see if we can clear things up.
There are two ways to present content on WordPress.com, pages and posts. This page does a pretty good job of explaining the difference between the two of them.
Take a look through there and let me know if that makes sense.

Hi, I have read all this before and I think I was creating pages when they should have been posts. I will try to get my head around this later today. Are you able to get access to my dashboard or can you just see the website as it appears to everyone else?
I have read all the support information that support staff send me the links to but I find it too complicated to understand.
-
Staff can see your dashboard. It would be very difficult to assist people without being able to see what they see.

Ah ok, sorry about that. Ok, I give up I’m stuck, really stuck. I’ve been off reading about adding links and seem to be even more confused. Are you able to simplify this for me,
‘That is true, you cannot use category pages for pages. So you might want to make a new page that has manually created links to your old non-post pages and then just add a link to that in the “previous events” submenu.’
I can’t figure out how to create links
I’m not sure what a non-post page is or the previous events sub menuI’m off to look at adding links again though, to see if I can at least figure that out.
Cheers. -
First off, my apologies for the delay in replying. I came down with the flu at the end of the week. Hazards of having young kids I suppose.
So, here is a great support page on making links:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
Take a look at it and watch the screencast, then let me know if you are feeling more confident regarding creating links. And we can take it from there.

Hi there, sorry about my delay in replying. Hope you are feeling better.
I can’t get my head around what it is I’m trying to do here now. I’m afraid I’m totally stuck. I have already read all the support links that you are sending me but decided to contact support staff because I didn’t understand them to start with I’m afraid.
if this was your website and you had lots of different events this year and for years to come, what would you do? (bearing in mind I have both posts and pages). cheers
-
Maybe, you can also clarify this part for me,
‘That is true, you cannot use category pages for pages. So you might want to make a new page that has manually created links to your old non post pages and then just add a link to that in the “previous events” submenu.’many thanks

Here is what I have done for the time being http://sharonyoungphotography.com/
It’s not great but it’s fine for the time being I hope. What do you think?
cheers -
I think that works just fine. It is pretty much what I would have done if it were my site.
