Confused, need help. Difference between setting up a Blog or Website?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, Im new here and have just some basic questions that I can’t seem to find answers to and I seem to be getting more confused the more I look.

First off what is the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?

I want to setup a Blog for our Business but am confused as to which to go to to set a blog up. The .org or .com.

Also each site talks about setting up a blog or website?

Once I start setting up WordPress are you given the choice to setup a blog or a website?

I also noticed that the .org doesn’t show monthly plans, but WordPress.com shows different plans.

One other question. We use 1 & 1.com for hosting. Within 1&1’s control panel I can setup a wordpress blog. But I am unable to tell if I will be setting up a blog or a website… very confusing..

Anyway sorry for all the questions and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,

I can help you with the above questions.

First off what is the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?

WordPress.org requires some technical knowledge and places more responsibility on you, the publisher. You can download the WordPress software for free at http://wordpress.org, but it must be installed on a web server before it will work. You will need to research and install your own themes and plugins.

WordPress.com is different. Here at WordPress.com, you don’t have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server. You can instead focus on creating wonderful content, and let us handle the rest!

You can get more details over here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

I want to setup a Blog for our Business but am confused as to which to go to to set a blog up. The .org or .com.

If you want to get your hands dirty, write your code yourself and host your website yourself then you can go with .org

If you want to focus on your beautiful content, and let us handle the rest then go with .com

You can use WordPress.com to create a professional website with engaging content. We have features to help businesses, professionals, non-profits, event coordinators, and e-commerce entrepreneurs create powerful websites.

Also each site talks about setting up a blog or website?

Once I start setting up WordPress are you given the choice to setup a blog or a website?

If you’re building a brand new site, you might be wondering if you need a website, a blog, or a website with a blog!

At WordPress.com, you can create all of these options easily, right in your dashboard.

You can read about this in more detail here:

Choose a Website or a Blog

I also noticed that the .org doesn’t show monthly plans, but WordPress.com shows different plans.

The WordPress.com hosting service has 4 plans and the plans are yearly.
Check out the plans at https://wordpress.com/pricing/

One other question. We use 1 & 1.com for hosting. Within 1&1’s control panel I can setup a wordpress blog. But I am unable to tell if I will be setting up a blog or a website… very confusing..

A blog is a type of site that puts your latest articles front and center. If you plan on writing new posts, publishing photos regularly, and sharing news, then a blog is most likely the best fit for what you want to achieve.

If you want to create a professional website with engaging content, you can build up a website. We have features to help businesses, professionals, non-profits, event coordinators, and e-commerce entrepreneurs create powerful websites.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

Hi and thanks so much for that information that really helps a lot and clears up quite a bit of my confusion:).

Couple more questions if that’s ok.

If I setup a site at WordPress.com premium for example, can it also have a blog along with it or is the wordpress.com also a blog all in one?

Also, what about as far as a new domain name that we want to register and use? do we do that during setup with WordPress.com? instead of for example me going to godaddy or 1&1 and buying our domain name first..

    thanks again

One other question. If we put up a product to sell on our WordPress site, is it possible to hook that product up to Paypal? and if so how hard is it to do that?

Cheers all and thanks so much for all your help…

Thanks to everyone for helping answer my questions….one more quick one…
Can you sell directly from your Blog……by just hooking up a Pay Pal account, or is it more complicated than that??

    Thank You…..
