Confusing problems with mp3s on my blog.

OK, I’ve just realized this today, and I’m very puzzled…

The background: a few months ago, I created a free account on Fileden in order to store some audio files and post them on my blog. I only uploaded two mp3s so far, both pretty small, and posted each one a different blog post.
And on each post, I offered the file for streaming (with the little WP player), and added the download link from Fileden. I remember testing both streaming and download after posting, and they both worked fine.
Oh, and I use Firefox (version 3.0.5) 95% of the time. I also have IE installed but rarely use it.

These are the posts where I put the mp3s:

    http://salomey5.wordpress.com/2008/11/04/nailin-palin-montreal-style/

Both stream fine in Firefox. However, when I click the download link, it opens a black window that says “Video is loading…”. And nothing happens.

I decided to try it with IE. There, when I click on the download link, the expected pop-window offering to either open the file or save it appears. Normal.
And the mp3 on the first post streams just fine.
However, on the second post, the mp3 streams in fast-forward???!

What the heck is going on?
I don’t know if I should ask for help here, on Fileden, Firefox, or IE. I’m at loss.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I tried the first one, and it worked just fine for me. Could you perhaps try it on a different computer? The problem could be local to that computer.

    Thanks for your reply, raincoaster.

Which one did you try, download or streaming? And what browser did you use?

I’m just confused by the different results I get from both browsers. And the streaming in fast-forward… I just don’t get it. Very bizarre.

I’ll try what you say though, computers can be very unpredictable animals sometimes.

However, until I get access to another computer, if anyone else tried my links, please let me know if they worked for you. If they do, I’ll just quit fiddling with this. It’s been driving me nuts all afternoon.

I tried both downloading and streaming, and I’m using FF 3. Mind you, I have Download Manager, so my downloads are a bit different and not representative of the majority, come to think of it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Download manager? I don’t know it… Is it similar to the Firefox “Download Helper” add-on?

I have Download Helper, and it worked. However, I think you’re right about these programs not being representative of the majority. That’s why I would like to find out what the deal is with my bizarro download links.

But as you suggested, it could just be my computer acting up. I might visit a friend later on, I’ll try it on his computer if I go. He only has IE, but at least, I’ll get to see if his machine behaves differently than mine.

Thanks for looking into it raincoaster. :)

On another issue: Where have you pasted the text from? You have introduced lots of junk code that burdens the page unnecessarily. For instance, your “!!!” carry all this with them:
<span class="ver" title="Ce signe de ponctuation doit être précédé d'une espace en français européen (mais pas en français canadien). ">!</span><span class="ver" title="Ce signe de ponctuation doit être précédé d'une espace en français européen (mais pas en français canadien). ">!</span><span class="ver" title="Ce signe de ponctuation doit être précédé d'une espace en français européen (mais pas en français canadien). ">!</span>
    Or your “trève”:
<span class="spellmod" title="trêve, trêves, rêve, rêvé, brève, crevé, crève, grevé, grève, revêt, rêver, rêves, rêvés">trève</span>
And so on. You should highlight all the text in the visual post editor and click the “Remove Formatting” button to get rid of all that (plus Update post afterwards, of course). Never paste directly from sources that will introduce extra code. If you do have to paste, do it via the “Paste as plain text” button, or paste in the html editor instead of the visual. If you prepare your posts in a text editor, use a simple one, NOT Word or other similar applications. Or use Windows Live Writer.

OK, call me dumb, but I do not understand one single thing of what you explained to me.

What bogus code are you talking about? Where was it, in my French post or my English one?

I normally use Blog Desk, and when I don’t, I write straight onto the WordPress editor. I found out about Word the hard way.

Is there any way I can fix my psychotic download links?
I’ve tried them on my buddy’s computer with IE, like Raincoaster suggested; on his, clicking the download link opens Windows Media Player. I’m at loss.

I’m almost at the point where I’m considering taking up aerobics and giving up on computers.

I alomost forgot, thanks for your help, panaghiotisadam, but I’m sorry to say I don’t have a clue what you’re trying to explain.

It looks like you may be using some sort of translation program or something? Do you maybe have that built into your browser? That last bit of code looks like a thesaurus entry or something.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wait, wait, thesaurus… I often consult one when I’m blogging… So yeah, it’s not impossible that I may have copied-pasted the odd word from there…
But how could one word produce all this mumbo-jumbo? And where was all this stuff hiding? Is there any way I can get rid of it?

    OK, I think that’s enough questions for now… :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    What the hell??!

OK, I (finally) put 2 and 2 together, and looked at the HTML view of my French post… Now I got it.
How in heaven did all this junk get in there? Is it because I wrote it in French, and either BlogDesk or WP don’t know how to handle characters like accents? Very bizarre…

And will it affect my post if I get rid of all that garbage?

    Thanks for your help, BTW.

It shouldn’t hurt your post in the slightest, good luck with it!
