Confusion between a site page and a blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

The ‘About’ (biog) page in my site has somehow been crossed with the blog page. I would like to delete only the blog page and re-do the ‘About’ page. At the moment, this page isn’t highlighted when the cursor is placed on it, and the text is an exact copy of what I wrote for the front page. As soon as I delete the text from the ‘About’ page, it also disappears from the front page. But the text I actually want on the ‘About’ page is on the blog page. There doesn’t seem to be a mechanism to fix this. Can you please help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello @academicandscholarlyediting,

It sounds like your About page was created as a blog post, instead of a page.

Since, I couldn’t see your website, I wanted to clarify if the below is what you wanted to do:
    1. Create an About page.
    2. Have a link at your Menu bar that says About, and links to your About page.

If that is, please start with deleting the blog post you have created for your About page. See instructions from this link.

Next, create a new page for your About page. See instructions from this link.

Then add your new About page as a Menu to your website. See instructions from this link.

Let me know if you get stuck anywhere, so I can help you further.

    Regards,
    Rose

    Hi Rose

    Many thanks for your suggestions.

What you have understood is precisely what I want to do. The problem I know have is that I cannot find the ‘Trash’ link/queue to which you refer for removing the unwanted blog page. Where should I look?

Sorry if this sounds stupid but the whole process is new to me.

    Regards

Peter (academicandscholarlyediting) (yes, I know it’s a clunky title)

  • Hello Peter,

It’s okay, I understand. :) I’ll make you instructions from my test site below:

    1. If you’re working on this website – academicandscholarlyediting.wordpress.com – you can click here, so you get straight to the posts list.
    2. That page shows all your posts for that website. Look for that About post. You will see this at the bottom: http://prntscr.com/h18xjd click More.
    3. Then it will give you this – http://prntscr.com/h18y5n – click Trash. Then it will tell you Moved to Trash in red font.
    4. You may want to permanently delete it. Scroll up and you will find these options at the top: http://prntscr.com/h18zd6 Click Trashed.
    5. Look for your About page. Then you will see this at the bottom – http://prntscr.com/h18zo7 click Delete Permanently.

The instructions are also detailed here:

    Hi Rose

Thank you, Rose, I have now deleted the blog page permanently. I have also re-written the ‘About’ page, which is listed under drafts. But I can’t get it to list on the front page menu. I don’t want to publish just yet until I’m happier with the script. But the other four pages I have composed are sitting on the site as intended.

Could you please tell me how to make the ‘About’ page join them?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Peter

  • Hello Peter,

    You’re welcome. :)

You need to get your About page published, in order to add it to your Menu.

Once your About page is published, follow the instructions below on how to add it to your menu:

    1. Click here to go straight to your site’s Customizer.
    2. You will find something like this http://prntscr.com/h19s3l on the left side, select Menus.
    3. Then you will see this – http://prntscr.com/h19scw – select Primary.
    4. From here http://prntscr.com/h19sx7 – click Add Items button to expand it to this http://prntscr.com/h19tme
    5. Select you About page, then click Add. Click Save & Publish button when you’re done.
**Notice the Menu options, that I highlight on the screenshot. You can put a checkmark on Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu if you want every page you make to be automatically added to your Menu.

Please note that your page needs to be published first, in order to to do this.

Let me know if you get stuck anywhere, and I will help you further.

    Hello Rose

Apologies for the delayed reply, I was sleeping (being on the other side of the planet, etc).

I followed your suggestions and it has worked. Once again, thank you.

I have just (I hope) one more question: how do I alter the order of the pages as they appear in the menu at the top of my site? At present, the ‘About’ page (which is now finally up there,) is last in the queue, and I want to swap it round with the ‘Testimonials’ page which currently precedes it.

    Regards
    Peter

  • Hello Peter,

    You’re welcome! :)

Yes, that’s possible. You can drag the menus according to the order you want. You can click it with your mouse, hold, and drag it to where you want to place it. See here: https://youtu.be/UFM1nMPdoKM

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Regards,

    Hello Rose

Once more, thank you for your assistance.

Having followed your instructions, I am now beginning to get a website that looks vaguely how I want it to look.

I really appreciate your guidance with this, and I have learnt quite a lot in the process.

    Kind regards

    Peter
