Confusion between displayed theme and actual theme

I like the Orvis theme and what I would like to do is copy the example shown when you select this style.

My website is for car reviews and photos I take of cars. What I would like to do is copy the template exact with the ability to click a picture of a car that then goes into a write up with multiple pictures displayed.

Can anyone help me with this. It is extremely confusing and I am not seeing anything that even remotely resembles the template when I go to edit my site. Please help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I can’t view your blog — it says page not found. Regardless, there’s some things you need to do to ensure your blog is setup to display the Orvis theme properly.

Here’s an excerpt from the theme’s page:

When you first activate Orvis, you’ll see your posts in a traditional blog format. If you’d like to use the Portfolio Page Template as the front page of your site, as the demo site does, it’s simple to configure:

Create or edit a page, and assign it to the Portfolio Page Template.
Go to the Customizer‘s Static Front Page panel and set “Front page displays” to “A static page.”
Select the page you just assigned the Portfolio Page Template to as “Front page” and set another page as the “Posts page” to display your blog posts.

The portfolio page title will appear by default. You can hide it if you prefer by going to Customize → Theme Options and check “Hide page title on Portfolio Page Template” option.

More instructions on setting a static homepage: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

You’ll obviously need to set up a portfolio, so here’s instructions if you haven’t done so: https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/

Also, make sure to take advantage of using Featured Images and Portfolio Shortcodes. These are explained more in-depth here: https://wordpress.com/themes/orvis/

    @mulhollandmagazine
    Hi there,
The first thing every Volunteer who wishes to answer any thread on these support forums does is confirm the actual URL being referred to and verify where it is hosted. In the case of domain URLs we check for domain mapping next.

mulhollandmagazine.com/ is not hosted by wordpress.com and there is no domain mapping upgrade for mulhollandmagazine.com/

    mulhollandmagazine.com is hosted by Defense.Net
    WHOIS: Click Here
    IP Address: 206.188.192.219
    Name Servers:
    dns094.b.register.com
    dns168.a.register.com
    dns010.d.register.com
    dns147.c.register.com

Those are very im[portant steps we Volunteers take so the blogger who asks for help gets the correct answers to questions posed, and can be directed to the correct support forums where required.

We provide support only for sites hosted by wordpress.COM. We do not provide support for wordpress.ORG software installs. Your site is not hosted by wordpress.COM. Our support docs do not apply, our theme versions are not the same as wordpress.ORG versions, and we do not provide support. You are posting to the wrong support forum.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

As you are referring to a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

  • Hi @mulhollandmagazine, it looks like you started a new account here and registered a new site using the Dyad theme.

You’ve mapped a domain, but that domain still points to your old host, so I’m not sure whether you want to use the old host or whether you’re planning on switching to WordPress.com. Can you confirm what you’d like to do?

And if you’d like the site to work here (instead of running your own installation) you’ll want to use these nameservers:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

Once you’ve made that change, give that a few hours to take effect. We’ll go from there. Cheers!
