Confusion with wordpress account. Is it necessary?

    Hi I already have a domain but was told by a friendly web designer that I need to create a wordpress account so that they can assist. The instructions they gave don’t match the options available. I prefer to keep the domain at my current host and that host has wordpress included in the control panel. Do I need to go through this process of setting up a wordpress account when I already have wordpress available at the account I have with the current hosts?

    Hi there,

    Apologies in the delay in responding to this thread. It is important to note that WordPress comes into two different flavours: WordPress.com and self-hosted. Each has different processes for doing things, so that might explain any discrepancies you’re hearing about. You can compare the two here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    If you run a self-hosted blog, and your domain is not with WordPress.com, there is no need to have a WordPress.com account. However, you may still want to, as it can bring several advantages, such as being able to install the Jetpack plugin on your website: https://jetpack.com

    Registering a WordPress.com is pretty simple to do, you’ve already done so if you’re posting in this thread. Creating a Jetpack connection can be done within a few steps too: https://jetpack.com/support/installing-jetpack/

    But it’s up to you on whether or not you wish to use it. Let me know if you’ve got any further questions about this. :)

    Thanks for your response. It makes sense to me now that you explained that. Yes I must have registered and jetpack is available when I open up the site I am building. but I don’t think it’s been installed yet. Will check as another person is also working on the site; someone younger and more savvy with these things:)

    I’ll check out the link you provided of .com v .org and that should clarify things more too. Thanks

    Hi Jenni, perfect. Your site is most likely self-hosted since the Jetpack plugin is automatically installed on WordPress.com sites then.
