Connect a domain
-
I recently bought this domain when I purchased the WP Premium plan, but I’m having a lot of trouble getting to the point where I can use the site as intended. I need to complete setup but I’m unable to do so.
Although I purchased the domain through WordPress, it says that it’s registered with an external provider. Exactly who this external provider is cannot be answered. An ICANN search says that the domain is not found in the Registry.
My WP account says I still have a free domain available to use; I purchased the premium plan with the understanding that the site address I chose would be the “free domain” advertised. Attempts to set up my chosen domain when I click to “claim” my free domain only results in “This domain is already mapped to a WordPress.com site.”
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
Apologies for the confusion. The domain was added as a “Domain Connection,” which is meant for domains that are already registered elsewhere. That’s why you saw it was registered externally.
I checked the logs to see what happened and found that you attempted to register the domain at a time when the TLD (.com) was in maintenance. That’s probably why the registration didn’t work as intended, resulting in the issues you faced.
I’ve removed the domain connection since the domain isn’t technically registered anywhere. Please follow the steps here to register the domain. You won’t be charged since the free domain credit is still unused.
On a separate note: Would you like to tell us a bit about the site you’re building? What’s the site for, and what features do you need? This will help us learn more about your site goals and share personalized suggestions with you.

Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it.
I’m a graduate student & I’m graduating soon. As part of my master’s thesis, I need a digital portfolio. I’ll be using the site to feature samples of my work in professional communications (specifically technical writing) through a particular rhetorical lens which relates to my thesis statement. It won’t be too crazy — a static landing/welcome page, some blog posts, and some content areas divided by genre/subgenres.

Sounds great @bkshaddix. Looks like you’ve got a similar domain that will work for you, and you’re well on your way to getting the site up and going.
For the content divided into genres and subgenres, it sounds like you might like using categories and tags, then organizing those into pages. We have two ways you can go about that. There are built-in category pages that you need only link with your menu, like so, or you can use a Posts Block to just show certain posts from a category wherever you’d like, on any page:
Use the Blog Post block to insert a list or grid of up to 100 blog posts (or pages, testimonials, or projects!) on any page. You can choose to show content based on category, author, or tag, display featured images or excerpts, change the text color, and more.
