Connect a domain I own question

  Why does connect a domain I own take me to a shopping cart? It shows a $96 fee to purchase the domain I already own? Plus it says the $13 fee to connect is waived for the first year. This is really not clear. I want to use a free hosting plan to try this out before I consider anything additional. I own my domain and do not wish to transfer it to WordPress. I want to try out the free hosting plan, including the free ssl. The instructions on your website https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/ show that I can do this for free. Please help.

  One of the paid plan at wordpress.com is required to connect your existing domain to wordpress.com.
