connect my domain to wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I already have a domain which I currently use for my emails.
I am designing a website which I would want to link to my new site.
How can I link my domain to my wordpress when i am done with the site? I cannot find any options to do so. I also guess that i will not be considered premium?
Thanks for the help in advance.
    Thanks

How did you want to link your WordPress.com site to your external site? You could, of course, put links in your menus and pages to your site, but there’s no way to integrate it into the structure of a third party site ex: http://myawesomesite.com/blog/

If you want to use a custom domain name for your WordPress.com site, that’s an upgrade, and you can find the documentation here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

    Hi stothek,
    Thanks for your response.
What i meant is that i already have a domain name which i use for my emails. I am in the process of building a site with wordpress and was wondering if mapping ($13 upgrade) my domain is going to allow me to be on Premium so i can get the full benefit of themes.
I want to leave my domain at its current registrar and have it load my wordpress site when i am done building the site.
    Thanks again for your help

Domain mapping will turn /sdfkasdjaksd21312.wordpress.com/ into your-site.com

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

However to keep your email working will be a bit more work – many ways to get there – some options cost – some don’t

    Hi auxclass,

great thanks. I understand domain mapping will be a yearly cost which i am fine with. however, will i be put on Premium? I would like to have access to css code etc…

Sorry for my ignorance but in terms of my current email. I have 2 now which are working correctly. Once i map my domain to my wordpress site, they will stop working, correct?. Can’t I add Mx record in WordPress or will I have to go with for example zoho?

    Thanks again for the help
    Chers

Domain mapping is a standalone upgrade, so it won’t automatically put you on premium. If you were to directly upgrade to premium then it would also include a domain mapping.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for the help.
My only concern is the downtime i will be getting with my emails when mapping my domain. Anyone know if i will be getting downtime with emails?
Mapping will require me to change my DNS settings at my current registrar. Will this be affecting in any way my emails?
    Thanks

Glad to help :) There can be a delay when you switch name servers as it propagates throughout the Internet. Typically this is less than 24 hours, but in some cases can take up to 72.

But, during this time, your old name servers will still be in place, so your email on the old provider will still work until the WordPress.com servers take over.

Just be sure you have e-mail configured on the WordPress side so e-mail will keep flowing once the name server change is complete.

    Ok great thanks.
So if i understand well I have no choice but need to move my emails to zoho for example?
Or can i just edit my MX records via WordPress UI?
Apologies for all the questions :).
    I really appreciate your help.
    Thanks

No, you can set custom records for other providers as well if you already have one set up. http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/add-other-email/
