connect vs transfer & order of operations

I’d like to either connect or transfer my domain to WordPress, currently hosted with Superb (pages I built with WebPlus Software).

My website has been active for over a decade and contains probably 100 pages, so I’d like to get it built up from scratch on WordPress before I connect or transfer the domain. I’m concerned about the site getting out-of-whack during the conversion of host.

I’m not fully decided on ‘connect’ versus ‘transfer.’ I have emails through my current domain host, and I thought it might be easier to at least start by just doing a ‘connect’ and if that works out after a while perhaps transferring completely to WordPress. Is that possible? Or does it make sense?

Should I purchase a WordPress plan and rebuild my website from scratch first (before connecting/transfer)? (I don’t think I can import the current site; I built it with WebPlus software, which is no longer supported …) OR can I take my time rebuilding the website (and all those pages) and after a couple of months (or however long it takes), then purchase the plan and hope for a smooth transition from current host to WordPress?

I’d appreciate any feedback on pros and cons for these options of connect/transfer and most efficient order of operations to get the site rebuilt and running with a smooth transition. Thank you!

My current site is http://www.pinyon-publishing.com (not yet hosted by or connected to wordpress).

  • Hi there,

My website has been active for over a decade and contains probably 100 pages, so I’d like to get it built up from scratch on WordPress before I connect or transfer the domain. I’m concerned about the site getting out-of-whack during the conversion of host.

Yes you can fully set up your new site with us before pointing the domain here. That way your current site can stay “live” until your new one is ready.

When you first create your site we will assign a staging subdomain you can use to get set up in private. When you are ready to “launch” the new site to replace the current one, that is when you will want to “map” or transfer your domain to us.

Please note that to connect your domain you will need one of our plans listed here, which all include a free domain transfer as part of the plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

I’m not fully decided on ‘connect’ versus ‘transfer.’ I have emails through my current domain host, and I thought it might be easier to at least start by just doing a ‘connect’ and if that works out after a while perhaps transferring completely to WordPress. Either option will work, but in the short term connecting (vs. transferring) will be faster and easier. You can always transfer the domain at a later date, and if you connected the domain to you WordPress.com site already, the transfer itself is seamless with no site downtime.

We recommend focusing on setting up your replacement site (at the temporary address) and then when you get closer to getting ready to switch sites, we can review your domain settings at that time and advise.

OR can I take my time rebuilding the website (and all those pages) and after a couple of months (or however long it takes), then purchase the plan and hope for a smooth transition from current host to WordPress?

    This. :)

You’re welcome to start out with a free site and take your time setting up, copying over content, etc. As I mentioned above you can upgrade and connect your domain toward then end, just as you are ready to launch the new site to replace the old one.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Very helpful. Thank you!

Just to confirm that I understand correctly …

So to set up my temporary site, I can do that with a free/available domain (e.g., pinyonpublishing.com no hyphen). i.e., the “temporary address”

And then when it’s ready to go live, I upgrade to purchase a plan and switch the site to the domain I own (i.e., pinyon-publishing.com with a hyphen).

I’ve started building a (free) test site at WordPress with pinyonpublishing.com. So it sounds like I could keep working up that one until I’m ready to make it live. At that point, I would contact you first ? before purchasing the plan?

Or just, when I’m ready to “upgrade,” it is at that point when I can switch the domain from the free temporary pinyonpublishing.com to the real pinyon-publishing.com.

I wasn’t aware you could switch the domain at the time of upgrade. But it sounds like that’s what you’re saying. And that would make the process seem much safer and not rushed.

    Thank you!

  • Your temporary address will be more like https://pinyonpublishing.wordpress.com/ — and you can change the domain as soon as you upgrade, though you don’t have to do it right away.

    Here’s what I’d recommend:

    – Build the site as much as you can. If you don’t need any upgrades to finish it, just upgrade as soon as you’re ready. Connect the domain, then transfer it if you’d like.

    – If you need an upgrade to finish the setup (to add an e-commerce store, for example) you can upgrade sooner. Just skip the domain part for now so you’ll stay on the free address until everything is ready.

    Hoping this helps!
