Connect with domain name

    Hi everybody,
i’m a teacher trying to help one of his student to configure his wordpress blog about a school community project.

This student has bought a domain name to another provider than wordpress.com and indicates to it the three domain name server between domain name provider and his blog : ns1.wordpress.com …

We were about to follow the steps of this page : https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

But at step 5, it seems that this action is charged about 96 €.

Could you confirm us that this operation is free of charges and that it’s the right procedure we need to follow ?

Thank you all for your advice
    Phikhi

  • Hi Phikhi,

yes, that is partly correct. To be able to use a custom domain (either mapping or registering it here), you need a paid plan. It does not necessarily have to be Premium plan, however.

You can read more about our plans and what they include here:

Hi fresatomica and thank you for your answer.
just to be sure we’re talking of the same thing :
this student has already bought a domain name to another provider than wordpress.com
He owns now the domain ‘toto.com’ (example)

About a year ago, he make a site as ‘toto.school.blog’ but now, he would like to personnalize it with this new domain name ‘toto.com’ he had bought.

So, i don’t understand why he had to pay for what it seems to be (in what i understand you wrote and in the page you linked) the same thing of buying a domain name at wordpress.com ?
It seems that he had to pay two times : one at the domain name provider and a second time at wordpress.com ?

I mean, it seems that it just consist in a redirection and i thought he just had to indicate the servers on both sides ?

    Am i correct ?

Please make it clear for me as i could explain to him and i apologize for my ignorance
    Thank you
    Phihki

  • Yes, we are talking about the same situation.
The domain mapping (using a domain registered elsewhere) is free, however, it requires any of our paid plans. It will not work just changing the nameservers if there is no plan active.
Our plans include the domain registration for one year so, normally you’d pay the price for the plan and for the domain. As I mentioned, if the domain is registered elsewhere, you do not pay additionally for it, it’s included within the plan. So it’s not like you pay double, you pay for the services you use.
    Hope that clarifies it more.

    Ok, it’s more clear now.
But as the domaine name has already been bought, taking a plan at wordpress.com is redundant as it include the domain name too ?

I really thank you for those precisions and i think i have enough informations to explain it to my student and help him to make his choice.

    Regards
    Phikhi

  • Paid plans are required to use domains here. For a domain you have already registered, there are two options:

Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

Both will require a paid plan.
