Connecting my WordPress Domain to another site

If I transfer my domain, will I still have access to my wordpress site?

  • Hi @jmedema522, your question could be interpreted in a few different ways, so I want to be sure I understand.

Are you transferring the domain registration to a different registry? If so, that in itself shouldn’t have much effect on your site at all.

If you are also pointing your domain to some other provider but want to be able to access the WordPress site at its free address, just be sure to set the free address to primary, or un-map the domain here with us.

If neither of these are what you wanted to do, send more details and we’ll happily help!

    Hi,

I’m connecting the domain to a Wix website, and will eventually transfer the domain registration to Wix as well but trying to avoid a lapse between the two websites during the transfer. My client still wants to have access to the WordPress website for informational purposes after the transfer. How do I set the WordPress site’s free address to primary? And if I do this, will there be a lapse in access during connecting the domain to the new Wix site?

    Thank you so much!

  • Hi there,

What’s the domain name? I don’t see a domain registered on the account you’re contacting us from.

Please note that we’re WordPress.com, the hosting provider and if the domain and the site are hosted elsewhere, you need to reach out to that host.

    Hi,

It’s for a client’s site that I’m working on. I have admin access but it doesn’t show up in the “My Sites” area. The domain is galoopclasses.com
The other issue is, neither of us are able to access her account from the WordPress.com login. Only from the backend page http://www.galoopclasses.com/wp-admin. Is there some way that the username and password could be different for each of these login areas?

That site galoopclasses.com is in no way connected to wordpress.com, that’s why you can’t log in using your wordpress.com account.

Okay I guess that makes sense for the login info. The website currently associated with galoopclasses.com was created in WordPress and we still need to be able to access it after I connect the domain to the new Wix website. How do I set the free address to primary or un-map the domain?

I don’t think your client has a free address here at WordPress.com. That assumption was made as you are asking questions in the forum for free sites hosted at WordPress.com. The domain is registered at PDR and the site is hosted at somewhere called Lightningbase so you’ll need to log in there/reach out to them.

Okay. If I go forward with connecting the domain to the new Wix site, there will be no way to access the backend of the old WordPress site, correct? We will lose all the page information and woocommerce information?

Thanks so much for all your help!

  • Hello there,

Technically there still would be an installation hosted on a server somewhere, but it would be at a different domain – a temporary one most likely.

The hosting provider would be able to assist with accessing that.

    I hope this helps.
