Connecting this website to existing domain

    Hi! I am working for a company that is paying Wix for our website, although our domain is registered with Namecheap. We would like to start using WordPress and transfer our current domain as well. However, it is not clear to me how the migration process exactly functions. First, we would like to create the website in WordPress before ‘substituting’ it to the one we have in Wix, so that we still have a website running while we are building the one with WordPress, is this possible? Then, since we are using a G workspace connected with our current domain, I would like to know what happens to our G workspace during this migration. Is there a risk that it will stop working in the window of time in which the domain migration is completed and the TXT record of our G workspace is not set yet in the DNS records?

    Hi there,

    I know that the process of moving from an old site to a new one (and moving your domain in the process) is a bit confusing. Happy to walk you through it:

    First, we would like to create the website in WordPress before ‘substituting’ it to the one we have in Wix, so that we still have a website running while we are building the one with WordPress, is this possible?

    Yes it is. We recommend that you start with the “assigned” URL that we give the site when it is first set up. For example I see your site uses the free URL of herclefinancial.wordpress.com, and it’s fine to use that as your “temporary address” while you get the site all set up and ready to go. This will also allow your current site to stay online until you are ready

    Once you feel the new site is ready to “launch” that is the time you will transfer the domain to WordPress.com, and when you do, this will automatically replace your old site with the new one, using the same URL your site always has used.

    When you transfer your domain to us, typically any domain settings you have, such as the DNS records for G Workspace, will remain intact. Typically there is no change when you move your domain, and your email will continue to function with no downtime.

    One thing to be aware of is that we do not offer the ability to use a custom domain on free WordPress.com sites (they have to use the wordpress.com address) so to move your domain you will need to first upgrade to our Pro Plan.

    The good news is that upgrade includes access to live chat support (M-F) so you would be able to contact us for help with setting up your site (I’m sure you will have questions along the way) and will also mean that when you are ready to move your domain and launch the new site, we can walk you through it in detail at that time.
