Connecting to a domain I own ending .co.uk
-
It seems wordpress are undergoing site maintenance to domains ending .co.uk which means I can’t connect my domain to the free wordpress option/plan when my domain ends: .co.uk It says try again in a couple of days. I wonder how long this message has been there, and if they are really trying to get me to sign-up to the premium plan, which does allow me to connect to my current domain I already own with another company right away. Or if in fact they really are doing some kind of maintenance which only effects .co.uk domain owners. In the mean time I’m assuming I can download a free template and start building my site and connect to my domain later at some point? Confused! Cheers Rob

Hi there, in order to connect a domain to a WordPress.com website, you’ll need to upgrade your free site to any paid plan, including Personal. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Keep in mind that going forward you’ll then need to renew both your domain registration at your domain registrar and your WordPress.com upgrade plan.
Here are the instructions on how to connect your .co.uk domain once you’ve upgraded https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/#domain-connection-overview
Hope that helps, but post back here if you have other questions about this.

And, yes, you’ll be able to activate any of the themes marked as Free in the Theme Showcase and get started building your WordPress.com site and then upgrade later to connect your domain, as well as gaining a number of other benefits which are outlined on the pricing page.
Again, hope that helps.
