Connecting to different Chapters of my book from home page

  • Unknown's avatar

How do I use the Widget to add different chapters of my book posts ie Chapter 1 Chapter 2 etc and when the viewers click on a chapter it goes directly to that chapter. FYI, I have a search widget on my home page and if a viewers types any Chapter of my book here, it will go directly to that Chapter. For clarity, I would prefer to actually display each chapter in chronological order. Any help would sure be appreciated-Cheers cyrilbursellblog

For clarity, I would prefer to actually display each chapter in chronological order.

Blogs are essentially a reverse chronological order publishing tool wherein the most recent published post will display on top. You cannot change this order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. There is no upgrade that allows you to change this post order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. It’s designed to serve your visitors as they come to read the most recent posts and will not be inclined to trawl through hundreds of posts to locate it.

See here for the option of creating a book-like structure > http://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/ Perhaps that will work for you.

Or you could use a single sticky post as an index page > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

Or you can falsify every date-stamp before publishing.

Staff have provided this support doc: Show your Posts in Chronological Order http://en.support.wordpress.com/show-your-posts-in-chronological-order/

The default timezone is UTC time. You can reset your timezone here > Settings > General Select the closest city to you in the same timezone in the drop-down menu you see there and then click “save changes”.

Edit the post, change the datestamp in the Publish module, and click Update.

All Posts are found here > Dashboard > Posts > All Posts

    http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php
*replace “/NAME_OF_BLOG” with the actual name of your blog

You hover over the title of the post and click the Edit link, then edit the datestamp in the Publish module and click update.

Note that you can examine these images so you see how to edit posts and change datestamps and timestamps where required.

    Wow! You guys are awesome.

I think in trying to clarify what I would like to do I ended up defeating my own purpose.

What I want to do is add each chapter number in my content sidebar to right of my blog that will bring when clicked on will bring up that chapter to read.

This now can be done in my blogs search field i.e. type in any chapter number and that chapter will come up for the viewer to read. I rather have each chapter number ex. chapter 1, chapter 2 etc. to be located in my sidebar to achieve the same purpost. Would that be possible?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers cy…

  • Hi Cy –

You can create a link within the text widget that you add to the side bar. timethief has provided those instructions.

Let me know if you run into any trouble and I’ll be glad to help.

Thanks Lizkarkoski for your suggestion however I’m such a dunce when it comes to this I seem to be going around in circles with Timethief instructions.

I sure would like to take you up on your offer to help me with my problem.

    Thanks and much appreciated

  • Hi Cy –

No worries. I’ll be glad to help. First, let me make sure I have a really clear idea on what you’re wanting to do.

It sounds like you want to add the different chapters of your book into text widgets on the sidebar of the site. And when a user clicks on the link, in that text widget, the associated chapter will open?

What are your ideas for the front page of the site? This is the first page your site viewers will see when they load it up. Do you want to incorporate posts there? Or would you rather leave an excerpt about the book, or the author?

We can easily assign your blog posts to update to a ‘Blog’ page or other designated area instead of the front page if you like the sounds of that. We will link the ‘Blog’ page to the menu so it’s easy for your readers to find.

Let me know what you think :)

Yes Liz, you got it exactly right.

I have a sidebar to the left and my main blog center, and a right sidebar where the book chapters will be displayed. At the right sidebar I would like the title of the book to show and under it, the chapters of the book. As I will be posting more books, I want to begin each book with the the book title and each chapter of the book under the title.

The center of my blog will be an ongoing chapter of the book as I post each day and as it appears here is fine without changing the order.

Thanks ever so much for taking the time out of your day to help me, I want you to know I much appreciate it.

P.S. Here is the url to my blog

  • Hi Cy –

I’ve added a text widget to your primary sidebar. You’ll see that by going to My Sites > Customizer > Widgets > Text

When you click on the widget to edit it you can change the title from “Book Title” to actual title. Then, copy the post link for each chapter and add it to the widget using this format as an example

    <li><a href="https://cyrilbursellblog.wordpress.com/2016/12/07/pursued/">Chapter 10</a></li>

You’ll see that Chapter 10 is linked to that post chapter. How’s that look?

    Hi Liz,

I thinks I created the code properly for chapter 1 however, it could not find the chapter. I know the date of the blog post is accurate, so I am confused as to what I might have done wrong.

    My blog url https://cyrilbursellblog.wordpress.com/

    Thanks Liz for the help

  • Howdy –

    No worries.

Head over to My Sites > Customize > Widgets > Text Widget > Chapter 1
You will see that I have added the following and the link is now working.

    <li><a href="https://cyrilbursellblog.wordpress.com/2016/11/19/chapter-1/">Chapter 1</a></li>

There was just a typo that was messing it up before. A nice cheat, is to create the link in your post editor, switch to the html view, and copy + paste that code into the widget. This will save you from hand writing the link code each time.
