connecting to IFTTT.com for twitter cross-post
-
Knowing that we will soon lose WordPress to Twitter cross-posting, I’m trying to connect my WordPress account to Twitter using IFTTT.com. There is an applet on IFTTT stated to do exactly this. However, on IFTTT I am unable to login to my WordPress account.
* Either by having 2-factor authentication on, generating an app-specific password (error: Unable to connect account) or
* Turning off 2-factor and using main password (error: unable to connect account)It does not appear to ‘time-out’ since the error pops up immediately.
I’m using, as wordpress site:
http://www.wordpress.com/home/ctlin.blog (my website)
or
http://www.wordpress.com/login-in/ (general login page)Help! I don’t know what else to try.
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi! Would you be able to share the link to the applet that you wanted to use? It looks like there are quite a lot for WordPress and Twitter, though it’s not entirely clear what exactly they need from the general overview.

But I have tried the top 3 most popular ones; all with same result. “Could not connect service” on the initial “login to wordpress” step.

Hi there,
One thing we’ve been noticing lately is that there is a lot of changes with how Twitter permits access to their API (which these methods may rely on for posting) and that is something that is difficult for us to test.
I did do a bit of research on the internet and noted that others have had problems with Twitter applets in IFTTT. This is a recent example I found, from about a month ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/ifttt/comments/12cft2f/twitter_applet_broke/
With that in mind, it may not be possible to use IFTTT as a workaround here, due to the fundamental ways in which Twitter is reshaping access from their end. I’d recommend checking in with IFTTT support to see if they have any insight into this issue: https://help.ifttt.com/hc/en-us
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

It’s also likely that the issue with IFTTT connecting to twitter is the same as it is for WordPress.com. Twitter changed their API access rules/conditions for everyone.
If you want to give it a try again, I’d suggest either using your site address as https://ctlin.blog/ or as https://ctlin.wordpress.com
Hope that also helps.

=sigh= Still frustrated. Note that I am not even to step 1 yet. I chose an IFTTT WordPress to Twitter app. Trying to get logged into WordPress, I CANNOT. I have 2 factor off, I reviewed and updated my pw, cleared my cache, turned off plugins. No joy. “Can not connect service” to WORDPRESS. Still stuck here.
Not even as far as trying to login to Twitter. Which, I agree, is a whole other can of worms, with twitter changing policy / API’s etc.

Since you are using a plugin-enabled site on our managed business hosting, connections so services like IFTTT require an application password, and do not work with your personal login credentials. More info here: https://wordpress.com/support/third-party-applications/#sites-with-plugins-installed
That will allow you to connect to IFTTT, but you’re right, Twitter is a a whole can of worms on top of that. You can get some cool automations going with IFTTT but I don’t think that will be one of them, through no fault of theirs (or ours.)
Thanks!
