  How do I connect the WordPress app to WordPress?
  Following the instructions on http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-applications/ just takes me in circles back to the same page.

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  https://apps.wordpress.org/support/ is the best place to get support for WordPress apps.

  There are FAQs a bit down this page. Please check them and post to relevant mobile forums linked on the same page.

  The app login process is fairly easy unless you have Two Step Authentication enabled. in which case you will use Application-Specific Password instead of the regular password you use to login to your account from the desktop.
