Considering Migration from Self-Hosted WordPress to WordPress.com
-
Hey there WordPress community,
I hope you’re all doing great! I’ve got a bit of a situation and I could really use your insights. Currently, my website, https://ageofnotes.com, is running on a self-hosted WordPress setup over at Dream Host. It’s costing me around $60 per year, and while things have been okay, there have been moments of frustration. I’ve been wrestling with those pesky 503 errors and inconsistent loading speeds, and honestly, it’s got me thinking about making a move to managed, official WordPress hosting.
But, you know how it goes – more questions pop up the deeper you dive into something new. So, here are my thoughts:
- Would I still be able to get my hands on those 3rd party plugins from wordpress.org? I’ve got a few custom ones too, so I’m wondering if those are still on the table.
- One of the main reasons for this migration contemplation is to kiss those 503 errors goodbye and maybe have a bit more consistency with page loading speeds. Is that possible?
- I’ve got this collection of custom software and tools that I’ve crafted myself. And sometimes, I tinker with open source apps too. Would I still have the freedom to upload and play around with them?
- Storage’s a bit of a concern too. Currently, my site’s munching up about 40GB. Is there a storage limit on WordPress.com, or is it kind of an unlimited buffet situation?
I’d really appreciate your feedback, and if you could spare a moment, maybe give my website a quick glance to see if there’s anything that might not jive well with the migration. I’m genuinely excited about this, but I definitely don’t want to dive in blind and end up with a surprise suspension or limitations I didn’t anticipate.
Thank you!!The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All the features of the different plans are here https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Note that a Business plan would be required to continue using external plugins and a lesser plan than a Business plan wouldn’t have enough storage for you. Some good news is that moving to a WordPress.com site with a Business plan could be done relatively painlessly.
If you have a website built with WordPress on another hosting provider, generally referred to as a self-hosted WordPress.org site, and want to move it to WordPress.com, use our Import Everything option. The Import Everything option will copy your existing self-hosted WordPress site to your new WordPress.com site, including your content, media, plugins, and the theme. Prerequisites A W -
It’s actually a relief to hear that the $25 business capable of handling my website. I wish there was a discount on the first year because I don’t have much on me right now but I will have to save up money to buy the yearly plan.
But wait why is it only 50gb? Can it be increased on demand or something? -
Hi @oujdaportail! And thanks @themagicrobot.
Re: the 50GB limit, that’s for your media library (it excludes the install itself and your database) and it’s all about being able to serve that up with load balancing and our super fast, world-wide CDN, not to mention incremental cloud backups your plan includes. We have additional space available for purchase if needed.
And our hosting really is excellent here. Personally, I’ve seen folks move sites off our servers, then move right back again because their traffic immediately 503s other servers.
That said, if one of the plugins causes performance issues, support would want to suss that out with you, usually through temporarily deactivating plugins til the issue is isolated. Then you’d work with the plugin developer to solve the problem. You might be that developer, so just a heads up on that! You’ll also want to be aware of a few types of plugins we don’t support here, and why. Does that help?
Oh, and yes, with the Business Plan, you’ll also have access to SFTP and MySQL.
We’re happy to answer any questions you might have! Or you’d be welcome to go ahead and pick up the plan and see how it goes. I’ve added a coupon to your cart, and we have a 14-day refund window, so feel free to give it a go!

Thank you for showing me that link! WordPress is practically banning most of the plugins I use such “WP Automatic”, “Post Views Counter”, “Redis object cache” and more. Sorry that makes me reluctant, I need to compare all my options here I found this plugin limitation severely exaggerated.

Hi @oujdaportail, understood. We do have built-in caching and stats features, if that helps. Let us know if you have questions!
