Considering the move to wordpress.org

Hi, I am considering moving to wordpress.org as I would like start generating an income from my blog. But I have a few questions:

I set up my own domain name with wordpress.com 1 month ago. Is there a limit on how long you can have a domain name with wordpress.com before moving to wordpress.org, I read on the forums here you have to have name for 60 days, i haven’t read this anywhere else???

I have been trying to find the cost involved in moving over, is wordpress.org free?? I understand I need to pay for web hosting, but is there any other cost involved??

Is there any other information I need to know??

    Thankyou for your help.

    Kat.

The 60 days has to do with transferring ownership or registrar for the blog, it is an anti-fraud safeguard.

You can change where you point to the name-servers any time (this is what you want). Two weeks ago I registered a new domain name, pointed to a construction page on my regular web site then pointed it to the WordPress.com blog I was mapping it to, all in about 4 days. So you can point your name anywhere you want, no limits or time issue.

Hosting is not free. $10 to $25 a month for hosting for most sites. Some hosts are better than others, the WordPress.ORG software does have some special requirements, check there for the specifics. The WordPress.ORG software is free.

You will now be responsible for installing your own software and maintaining it (or hiring it done).

The math for making money seems to be a bit tough and requires a lot of traffic.

WordPress.ORG is the keeper of the software you plan to use: http://wordpress.org/support/

Most bloggers only make around $100 per year, which typically does not cover hosting. It takes around 2500 to 5000 hits per month before you can start earning, and the ad networks typically don’t cut a check until your total revenue reaches $100. Also a lot of it depends on your blog subject matter. Some subjects bring viewers that are more likely to click on ads than others.

Short version: It’s a roll of the dice.
