Consolidating accounts

I seem to have opened two accounts. The one with the posts (and the username that I like) is the one with the email address I don’t want to use. The account with the email address I DO want to use has no posts. How can I consolidate the accounts?
I would just change the email address in my account settings but it tells me that that email address is in use.
    Thanks!

Hi cygnusaloft, I’d recommend using a third email address — or better, an alias. For an example with Gmail, instead of this:

(email visible only to moderators and staff)

    Use this:

(email visible only to moderators and staff)

You can make that +1, +whatever, +doesnotmatter … whatever letters or numbers make the most sense to you. Gmail will ignore the plus sign and anything after it. But we won’t, so it’s in effect a second email account that delivers to the same address.

If you don’t use gmail, you can check with your mail provider for how to create an alias. Then both accounts can work with the same inbox, while technically having separate addresses on our side. And you can use the alias with the account you don’t want — change that one first, confirm it, then change the address for the good account.

Want to give that a try?
