Contact Form does not send email – redirects Feedback to "Spam" tab

Hey, folks. I have a free wordpress site, and I added a contact form — which WORKED. It emailed the proper (gmail) address, and I got the email alerts when folks filled out the contact form.

Then I edited the form (to alter a label on one of the fields, not to alter the structure of the block) and now no matter what I do, every time someone fills out the contact form it gets stopped by WordPress as “Spam” and I have to go into the Feedback tab to clear it by hand instead of getting an email alert.

This is a huge pain in the ass. Any tips?

  • Hi there!

Editing the label should not affect anything in the form.
Could you give us some more details? I only see one message in your feedback tab, was it the one you moved from Spam?

Hi! I moved the other messages from Spam into trash and deleted them — the one message that remains is the one that came through properly.

I just filled out the form in a different browser window and it went into spam — so you should be able to see that one now.

I honestly have no idea what changed — but every time I (or a friend) fills out the contact form now, it goes into spam as that message just did.

  • It looks like the form in question has been removed.

Would you please add it and let us know the URL of the page it’s on? We’d like to see the form in action to help narrow down exactly why it’s happening.

Then, please test it out a bit too yourself, and if things go into spam, please leave them there for us to investigate.

It appears that in my tinkering to try to fix it, I deleted the original form and replaced it with a new one — which is currently on this page — https://montgomerykate.wordpress.com/

In both cases I used the “insert contact form” block in the exact same way — I’m still new to the block editor, but I can’t imagine why one inserted contact form would behave so differently from another.

I will open up a browser in incognito mode and submit a few test contact form entries from a few different IP addresses, with and without a VPN active, and leave them in spam / note what differences take them out of spam.

Thank you for your attention and swift replies. I really appreciate it.

    Kate

PS: HOW STRANGE. Turning off my VPN (which is set to the same country I’m in right now, USA) and submitting the form allowed it through to my email immediately.

    Is that a known bug?

  • Your IP address is one of the first things our spam system checks for past spam activity, and when you use a VPN, you share an IP address with thousands of other people (some who may have used it to spam).

In your case, the IP you got from your VPN has been responsible for over 3,000 legitimate spam items across our entire network today alone.

To avoid this, make sure that you use a legitimate VPN that takes action against users abusing their network. Free VPNs, or at least those which don’t subsidize free accounts with paid plans, are notorious for harboring spammers.

Or, at the very least, try not to use your current VPN when commenting or submitting contact forms.

Thank you! That’s good to know. I do pay for my current VPN provider, but apparently it’s time to find a new service provider, because that is NOT OKAY, VPN PROVIDER.

Thank you for all your help!
