Contact Form-Max. number of characters

The contact form shortcode is handy.
Can one set a limit on the total number of characters in a contact form? Is there any simple coding I can use? We are thinking of having occasional writer contribute content. It would be one-time situation for the contributor so we will not want to make them a wordpress blogger author.
We will be imposing a maximum word length just so that people don’t give us reams of text or else I’m forced to spend time to do substantial content editing (and get caught in convoluted discussions with author). Having a form might force some over-enthused people to stick within the article length.

You could make them a contributor which won’t solve your problem but can make submission and editing easier. I don’t think there’s a way to limit the number of characters/words but if you tell potential guest authors that there submissions won’t be considered if they go over a certain limit you are much more likely to have them pay attention to you.

Hmm..well there might be 1-2 heavyweight (in terms of power) who we couldn’t impose the rule of not considering their article if they exceed maximum length.
These are people we would be relying for sponsorship: meaning money, support, etc. Serious stuff.
Won’t be making these 1-time writers as wordpress contributors. It’s not worth the hassle of simple training..some of these people have full-time, high profile jobs.

You could make such a form in Google Documents or perhaps something like Survey Monkey. But if it’s over 300 words, you’re going to have to edit it anyway, and I’m sure most people who would write more than 300 words realize this and won’t kick up too much of a fuss.

If you have a small number how about they just email you their article and you cut and paste? Have their name displayed as the author – I have done this for friends and worked OK – if the article does not have a lot of formatting the paste goes real quick.

If pasting from email, use the paste as plain text button on the lower icon bar in the editor. Stripping out all the code at the very beginning will save you a lot of headaches in the end.
