i would like to insert content in all areas of the website (header, footer, sidebars, etc.). the text widget seems like the best way to add content, but that widget can only be inserted into specific areas depending on the chosen theme. so is there a theme that allows the text widget to be inserted into any area? i haven’t been able to find one. if not am i able to create my own theme? or is there a better way to do this?
as an example, this blog (http://givefairtrade.wordpress.com/) seems to allow content to be inserted into the header.
anyway, i hope this makes sense. i used to having full access to every aspect of a website, so using wordpress is a bit awkward for me right now.
thanks for any help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Widgets are only for sidebars. There are some themes here that have a left and right sidebar location, or two right or two left, and there are even some that have footer “sidebar” locations. Text widgets can be placed into the header area in some cases, but it requires some pretty advanced inline CSS to do that.
Widgets aren’t really designed for a lot of content, and they are virtually ignored by search engines. Basically search engines pay attention to standard pages and posts, so that is something to keep in mind.

The site you reference is just using Pages in the header – that is a standard feature in most WordPress.COM Themes.

when you say “using Pages in the header”, do you mean the person added a page in the actual header?

Some themes have custom image headers and some do not.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/Some themes have Page tabs above the header images and some have them below the header images. Some themes allow for custom menus in the navigation bar where Pages tabs are usually found and some do not.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/The features for the themes are searchable.
You can use the search utility and Feature Filters in your Dashboard > Appearance > Browse Themes > Feature Filters to locate themes of interest to you. (A-Z, Popular, Features)
Each theme has a thumbshot and a features summary description. You can browse and when you find one of interest you can click “Preview”. When you are ready to make your selection you can click “Activate”.
If you look browse those themes and choose the one that’s closest to what your prefer and then tell us what you want to accomplish we can help you achieve it.

BTW the site you point to is using the Twenty Ten theme and has static pages titled
* Home
* Partners
* Where to Buy
* Why Fair Trade?The Page tabs for them are in the border below the custom header image. This is the support documentation entry that explains how to create static Pages for content that rarely, if ever, changes.

In some themes you can position the content of a text widget wherever you like – see here:
