Hi there,
I’d like to help, but I need a bit of clarification on what you are asking. Do you want readers to click on the image and then be taken to a separate page where the recipe is shared, or are you saying you want want visitors to click on an image and have the recipe pop-up in a window on the same page?
The first way is pretty straight forward–just link the image to the page where the recipe lives.
Here’s how that works: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/image-links/The second way is more complicated and, as far as I know, not possible on WordPress.com.
A final note: If you want to have several images on one page, each of which links to a different recipe page, you might consider using the portfolio feature built into WordPress. Here’s more on how that works: http://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/

Hi lizthefair,
Thanks for your help. Yes it would be cool to have the second option. But after you mentioned about the portfolio feature, i’l rather go with it. Also i an sending the url of a website having similar function that i wish to have, so you get an idea of what i am asking for.

Thanks for the example Byron.
I did some testing and the portfolio option should absolutely work for you.
Here’s what you do.
Set up each recipe as a separate project using the instructions here.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/Be sure to set a featured image for each project–that’s what will appear on your main page.
Once that’s done, you’ll create a regular page where the featured images for each recipe will be displayed. Give the page a title the way you normally would, and then use the portfolio short code to pull info into the page.
For testing I used
[portfolio display_content=false]so that just the photo, title and a small bit of entry text showed up on the page. You can customize the code further by following these instructions: http://support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/
That should do it. If you run into any trouble, or have questions along the way, let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Since you are planning on posting recipes, I thought you might find this helpful as well. http://en.support.wordpress.com/recipes/
You would still follow the instructions I gave you earlier, the recipe short code would just help make the pages where each recipe lives look a little nicer.

Hello Lizthefair,
Thanks for your help. I will work on the method you told me. I hope you visit my website. i have not purchased the domain name yet. So if i purchase a domain name from godaddy.com and want to add it to my wordpress website can i do so? Also i do not want to upgrade my account on wordpress i just want to use the free version, coz it is just and info site.
Let me know how i can do this. -
You can use your own domain on your WordPress site. You can purchase it from GoDaddy as you suggested, or you can buy and map the domain all at once in the WordPress.com store. The second option is easier, and will probably end up costing you less. Here’s the information on how that works:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-a-domain/
Note: adding a domain is an upgrade so there is a cost associated with the change ($18 a year if you purchase and map the domain through WordPress.com or $15 a year if you map a domain you purchase elsewhere–plus whatever the domain registrar charges you for the name). This is different than buying one of the package upgrades though.
Let me know if you have any questions about that!

Hello Lizthefair
Guide me in all these-
1) I have a friend who has a server. Il purchase a domain name and host my website on his server. is this possible. State the methods to transfer my website on his server.2)I have made my website on wordpress.com but i find amazing plugins in wordpress.org and i have also made a similar website on a localhost on my laptop using wordpress.org. So how can i transfer that website on the server. It is free right to manage my website on wp.org?
3) I will have to download and install wordpress on my friend’s server. So then can i work from home on my website or il have to always go the the server location and carry out updation.
Kindly guide me in the above 3 topics.

1) Yes it’s possible to host your site on your friend’s server. Since you don’t have much content, I wouldn’t worry about transferring your site, just get a WordPress.org install set up on his server and start from scratch. Your new site will work slightly differently than the one you have here on WordPress.com, so you’ll want to get yourself up to speed on the differences before you move: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
2) It’s free to use the software you can download on WordPress.org, but it doesn’t come with webhosting. To move to WordPress.org you’d have to either host your site on your friend’s server, or purchase hosting. There are lots of different companies that offer web hosting services, many of whom specialize in WordPress.
3) Generally speaking you would be able to work on your website from home. You should really talk to your friend though about how the server is set up, how you will access it. You will also want to confirm that your friend has a “web” server–so that once your site is up and running people will be able to see it on the internet.
You didn’t ask this, but the other thing to be aware of is that if you host your site on your friends server, you and your friend will be solely responsible for the security and maintenance of your site.
You will also want to create an account over on the support site for WordPress.ORG, as this forum is for sites hosted on WordPress.COM and we are not really able to help much with self-hosted sites. Here’s the link to that forum: http://wordpress.org/support/
Good luck!

Hello Lizthefair,
Thanks for your info. Let me know this which according to you is best wordpress.com or wordpress.org. in wordpress.com i do not get to use the plugins and i want to use an animation in my photo in about us- similar to timehop.com-about us. i have the code that they have used.
second regarding the portfolio please guide me in this from scratch. you can give me one example of a recipe and how i can add it to my recipe page and not on the homepage.
-
I tend to prefer WordPress.com because the ease of use and built-in security features are more important to me than the ability to use additional plugins–but it really is a personal decision. This post goes a bit deeper into the benefits of each platform: http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/com-or-org/
As for the portfolio info, I don’t have time to give you more detailed instructions right this minute, but I will try to get back to you later today. Note: I did give you pretty clear instructions above, so it might make sense for you to try to follow those in the meantime and let me know where you are getting stuck in the process.

Hello Lizthefair,
I have tried the portfolio as per the instruction you provided. I have got the recipe thing done but there are these problems- 1) The shortlink url is displayed on my page . i want to hide them and just display the images.
2) I want to use some effect on the recipe image and the name of the dish that is shown below the image should be shown on the image. Or some better effect you think is good
3)i want to add a user navigation path so he know his movement on the website. so as to make it easy for user to read recipes and go back.In the about me page i want to add an effect similar to that in timehop.com about us page. Let me know if i can add any effect?
-
Hmm, I did not expect the links at the top of the page either.
Can you confirm the only text you entered on this page http://byronwills.wordpress.com/recipe-corner/ was
[portfolio display_content=false]If you added anything else by hand that could be contributing to the problem.
As for the rest of your questions, I’m afraid I can’t really help you.
The only WordPress.COM theme I know of off the top of my head that uses breadcrumb navigation is Big Brother. You can see a demo of it here: http://bigbrotherdemo.wordpress.com/residents/arts-culture/.
If you wanted to stay on WP.COM and have that feature, you could try that theme. As for effects on the recipe images, you have some options with CSS assuming you have the custom design upgrade . It would depend a lot on what you wanted the effects to be though.
It’s also starting to sound like granular level customization of the site is really important to you, and if that’s the case you might be better off making friends with (or hiring) a developer and moving over to WordPress.org.
