Content Policy Question – Controversial Mature Content
-
I’d like to write a blog that includes information about scientific findings and personal interviews related to matters of sexuality and gender. I wouldn’t link to any sites that include pornographic content or host any pornographic content on my blog – though I would report it as containing mature content.
What I want to double-check is that the content would be allowed on WP.
My blog would essentially be information about and advocacy for destigmatization and decriminalization of people and sexual interests – based on scientific findings, academic articles, and interviews.
I would not be advocate for abuse, or provide information about how to do illegal things and get away with it. (No matter how ridiculous I think it is that some things are illegal.)
Not long ago, lesbian and gay sexual orientations would have been one of the central topics of my blog. Now that there’s 50% national support for marriage between people who are lesbian or gay, my blog would focus more on less supported populations.
Here’s a sample list:
– People who identify as atheist (still one of the most distrusted groups in the U.S.)
– People who identify as bisexual (affected by stigma that doesn’t apply to people who are lesbian or gay)
– People who identify as asexual
– People who identify as other-gender (i.e. not male or female)
– People whose physical appearance doesn’t match social expectations (e.g. transsexual, intersex)
– People who are attracted to legal relatives (e.g. by adoption)
– People who are attracted to biological relatives (e.g. full-blooded siblings who meet for the first time when they are adults)
– People who are attracted to children
-People who enjoy risky sexual activities (such as consensual nonconsent play or dangerous BDSM activities)No graphic depictions of any acts will appear on my blog, and I will not suggest that people violate any laws (e.g. that people act on attractions to a sibling or child) – nor will I link to content that does so.
I also will not suggest that people should try dangerous or self-harming acts – or link to content that does.
Two examples
Age of consent is a very complex area of law – especially now that teenagers are sexting. While I would write essays that advocate for changing consent laws, I would not suggest that anyone ignore current laws – or suggest any means by which they might get away with behaviors that are currently illegal (such as someone living in California who is 19 having sex with or obtaining nude images of someone living in Oregon who is 15).
Pedophilia has gotten attention recently due to lawmakers bringing up the topic and the American psychological Association distinguishing between pedophilia, pedophilic disorder, and child abuse. As with any person who has an unusual sexual interest, paraphilia, or psychological state described as a disorder, I will advocate for treating people equally as people, regardless of their physical or mental characteristics. I will provide information to help people understand why a person has the interests or behaviors that they do. I will not write content that approves of child abuse – or suggests ways that people who are guilty of abuse (or who want to abuse) can get away with it.

Unless I’m missing it, you have described your blog, but not asked any specific questions.
If you have a specific question, could you please restate it?
-
The question was: It the content described above acceptable according to WP’s content policy?
In particular, the words “Post content that promotes pedophilia” were of interest, as I wasn’t sure if my intended content would be interpreted as “promotion”.
-
This question is motivated in part by the fact that when I asked a similar question about content over on Blogger, I was advised to look for a different blog host.
-
You’ll certainly be marked as Mature, but probably not banned. That’s not a staff ruling, it’s just eight years of experience here. Hang in there till staff respond again.
-
The content you describe is acceptable at WordPress.com. Timethief covered the basics of things not allowed (sexually explicit materials, child pornography, etc). It doesn’t sound like you’ll be posting that type of content. Please do mark your blog as mature though, which will prevent it from being listed in global tag archives and being Freshly Pressed. To do so, navigate to the front of your blog. Hover over the blog title in the upper left-hand corner and report the blog as mature.
