content theft
-
Hi
You’re going to need to be kind to me here, because I barely know what I’m talking about! I’ve noticed several of my posts have been appropriated by some kind of spammy site full of ads.The posts link back to my blog. Can I, indeed SHOULD I, do anything about this? It’s stealing bandwidth, right? Is it really common (as I think)? What do I do now?
Thanks,
Dumb at twolimeleaves ;) -
Have they linked to the post on your blog, or have they taken it and made it look like it is theirs?
Can you give us a link to an example as well as a link to the same stuff on your blog?

Hi thesacredpath
Thanks for such a speedy response! And, would you believe it – I looked and the page isn’t working any more. There were several of these. Here’s my post –
http://twolimeleaves.wordpress.com/2007/10/24/seven-itty-bitty-sins/
and this is the address it was also on (now not working)
http://www.mybabyfoodrecipes.compermanent-link-to-seven-itty-bitty%c2%a0sins/
At first I ignored them, but then today it happened within a couple of hours of my post going up. (today’s one showed up in my comments as spam and I deleted it, but it looked like the same thing again)
Do you know what this is? -
I just realised I didn’t really answer your question. It went something along the lines of
“Twolimeleaves has posted this today blah blah b;ah (95% of my post) read the rest here (link to the original post) -
If they give you credit, and link back to you without saying the post is theirs, it would typically fall under “fair use.” From what you describe I think it, in this case, fall under fair use. You still have the right to ask them to take it down if you wish.
If they were to take the text, copy it to their site and not link back to you, then that is a violation of your copyright. Once you “publish” something you wrote and created on the web, whether you say it is copyrighted or not, it is copyrighted and under the protection of copyright laws. Here are some links to help you understand things. The last link is particularly good when it comes to understanding your online rights.

Typically sploggers and people who steal stuff online will get it from your RSS feed. You can limit what is shown on your RSS (syndication) feed by going to options > reading and making sure your RSS feed is set to “summary.” Also, I would suggest limiting the number of posts under “show the most recent:” is set to only 1 or two, that way if someone is trying to steal your stuff from RSS feed, they won’t get much.

OK. Thanks so much for that! I can see that the site is just ads, but I haven’t come across them before so wasn’t sure how to handle it. The links are great, thank you!
